Merc 150 4 Stroke Trim Issue

Question

Rich Krause

I have a 2015 Merc 150 4 Stroke. When I'm not running or in neutral I can trim up and down. When I'm idling I can trim up and down. When I hit it I can trim up but not down. When I put it back in neutral I have to trim up a little and then the down works again. I'm guessing trim sensor or trim relay. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Rich

Welcome to the forum.

Of course the first and cheapest thing to check is the fluid level. Trim it all the way up before you check the level so it's not under pressure.

It sounds like you are only having issues with 'down' occasionally. You can easily check relays by swapping them with each other, 'up' relay would go in the 'down' relay spot etc., If you have issues with 'up' after that, it's a bad relay. I recommend replacing both. If nothing changes, then it's something else. Could be a loose/weak connection or a faulty pump. Possibly something in the control box that is hitting the wires to the switch when the handle is pushed forward. I've seen all of the above problems more than once. Remove prop and run on muffs to do voltage testing, starting at the pump to pinpoint the location of the problem. Or bring it to your local dealer and bring a case of beer if you want it done fast.

BigV..... how things can change in a day. I fished from 8:15 until 11:45 this morning when I caught walleye #50. Probably the best morning ive ever had on the lake. Lindy rig and half crawler was the method. This morning when you graphed those pods of fish they bit.  As far as the lake in July and August? Personally August is my favorite month. Typically when you locate fish they bite. Wind blown areas holding perch minnows is what I concentrate on. Quite often it's sand pockets for me. That was the key today as the fish were coughing up perch minnows. Fishing always snaps back into shape when they get off the bugs. Soon the basin will be alive with the trollers. I really like the leadcore bite. Usually the quality of the fish caught is quite good. I'll be fishing walleyes the rest of the week hopefully continuing to report an improved bite.

Same! It’s been terrible for me. I always blame myself but I feel like rumor around the lake is that it isn’t worth fishing for walleyes after June or before September. I hope that’s not the case and it is just me lacking knowledge.

Excellent report Muskies!  Thank you!  Also really appreciate the pictures that you include in your posts.  We are looking forward to being on the lake boat camping in 16 days.

Fished Whitefish both Sunday and Monday from about 6AM until 10AM each day. Used only artificial lures.  Trolled  weed edges some of the time with Shad Raps #8 size, and then a little deeper with the #9 size Flicker Minnow.  Only caught one 29 inch Northern trolling.  Spent about 1/2 of the time casting  a jig and soft plastic into about 12 ft to 18 ft  where there were decent, but not great weeds.  Caught  several small Northerns plus 2 more that were 27" and 28".   The bonus was a 17.5" Largemouth.  No Walleyes either day.   Monday had several "bite offs" on the soft plastics.  That is kinda the problem with using them where there are Pike.

Timber Bay Lodge is a good spot, I always go there when I go to birch lake.

Launched out of Copas today. Water is really low. And the wind was really blowing upstream (what else is new? 🙄) I had to run my outboard in reverse just to drift downstream in some stretches. Fishing was really slow. Caught 2 little smallies and 32” and 29” pike. Pike are sitting right on the bottom where cold springs are entering. Tried trolling the main channel, but didn’t catch anything.

So I figured I'd leave a report. I got up Saturday night. Problem is..... not much of a report other than in 10 years fishing this lake its the worst 2 days fishing ive ever had. I did get 2 16"last evening. But both mornings? Ive never fished so many thick pods of fish that would not go on anything. This afternoon I even tied walleye flies to try on a wolf river rig in the hopes of imitating bugs. Picture enclosed. I'll be up through the weekend so hopefully we get far enough away from the hatches that the bite gets going again.

If I were Moosebirds, I would move the ice cream cart outside like the beer carts at a nightclub. 80% of their traffic has to be ice cream related so they could sell it outside. If they have to keep it inside they could have someone outside taking orders/collecting cash and another worker bringing it out so that you don't have to crowd everyone inside. Heck, they could have a dockside ice cream cart filled with icecream sandwiches for grab and go!

I honestly have not even attempted to fish the chain in the recent weeks.  This past week my FIL did go on Tuesday to Trout and found a few willing whitefish for the smoker again but he said it got too hot to fish.  On Thursday and Saturday we went to lake further north and found a few willing crappies to keep us active but could not find any walleyes.
