Any ice reports out of McKinley? Is it safe for a 4wheeler by Sunday?

8.5" of good black ice outside of McKinley Park Bay.  Lots of ATVs and side-by-sides running around.  I drove my sled from the Park to Stuntz Bay and found good conditions the whole way.  There was even a very small truck on the ice just outside the bay yesterday.  As always, be very cautious on ice travel.

DNR recommends 12-15" of ice for medium pickups.  If we get the colder weather they are predicting for Wednesday-Saturday, I think Vermilion may be close to that by Saturday, December 8.  Snow cover will affect that, and I would definitely check the ice before venturing out.  I personally wouldn't rush it.

JL and Ely,

Thanks for the ice updates...Just got back from ck of local lakes around Cloquet area...Lots of portables out on chub and Long lakes...Some four wheelers also going out...Heard ice was on avg of 7" on Chub....I even noticed a couple of guys walk out on St Louis river right in town, probably not a good idea at this early point!

Anybody been out on the west end? Wondering what kinda of ice we can expect in Wakemup and Head of the Lakes this weekend.

JFitz - I've heard between 5"-8" within 150 yards of shore in Head of the Lakes. Probably less in the middle of the bay. Sounds like there is another large pressure ridge this year. Not sure about Wakemup. Last night and tonight will help.

Appreciate the info! Sounds like that deeper water is holding some heat. Probably have to keep the snowmobiles off this wknd.

I would highly advise against driving anything other than a sled/atv/utv yet. We just haven't had good cold yet and nothing in the next week either. 2-4 inches of snow cover has the lake on a stand still. Max of 10 inches what I'm finding but have heard as little as 6-7  inches out front yet.

I was on Frazer Bay last night, 9"s of ice, mighty rough in spots.

I'm ridin a snowmachine.

I would not drive my truck out there, unless you want us to read about the doorknob that went through the ice on Vermillion. LOL

By the By, fishin was nonstop for about an hour just before dark, managed to bring home enough for dinner.

Most are pretty small 10"s to 12"s, with a smattering of fish to 16"s.

Retirement is great! LOL

Jim

Frank-

Good update.  I'm in Cloquet; haven't look at any area lakes as of yet.  I was on the Harbor last weekend; 5 inches of ice where I was fishing.

I don't want nobody "breaking the seal" in my lake--use your empty Mountain Dew bottle  🤔 (But seriously, I hope the DNR isn't so blinded by the AIS lingo in proposal that they don't seen how blatantly and dramatically it will decrease access...   Furthermore, I can't believe every lake-association isn't watching this intently;  ready to file their own versions as soon as they see what the outcome is...)

You get the seal and drive away.   Who will break the seal at minnetonka or Mille Lacs or White Bear or Osakis or whatever?   This is the first I heard of this seal business.  I would certainly be interested in how it is supposed to work.      I can imagine how something like this would possibly work but it would need to be a statewide thing, or even multi state.      Right now, I go to the cleaning station and get inspected and get the seal.    Sometime later I show up at an access and they look at my seal to see if I am allowed to launch.   Is that how it works?    Does the seal have a timestamp?   Is the seal where my boat connects to the trailer, so launching boat automatically breaks it?   Somebody has to break it?     So many questions.... And it isn't even a lake where I go....

^^ thats what i thought.  Just needed confirmation.  Here is a picture looking East from Nelson landing Monday 3-25 (Not my picture, stolen from Facebook) Shouldn't be too long now.  It seems to always hang up on the final stretch haha!

Sort of!!?   Spring hockey practice starts April 8th.  5-6 practices for the month only.  BUT, ...April means the start of Travel and JVL baseball as well.     It is turkey season(scouting anyway),  I can work around athletics!

I wouldn’t turn it down.  That and another burger stop. 😋     Is hockey done now?

The water rushing at the falls in Big falls is a yearly occurrence.  No big alarm this time of year.  Big falls is a long ways from the Rainy.   Now, the if the ice capped river builds a up ton of pressure and it has a sudden blowout, that will certainly change things.  The temps forecasted are working in our favor, a nice slow/normal melt.   The Big fork seems to have a lesser impact than the Little Fork.  We should be ok for a couple weeks I HOPE!

Heard one can see open water from the Nelson (Birchdale) access this afternoon. It is getting close.
    • ANYFISH2
Gotcha. If you need a scout out this way,  just let me know.   Spotted 6 more this afternoon right near the house.  They usually dont show hear till mid season.

Last year’s spot will likely be my fall back spot, along with maybe checking in at that other place you mentioned before.  The good news is I just heard today the birds appear to be doing well at last year’s spot.   The “new” spot is a property that we seem to have “limited” permission on.

one would think the river might be a little tough to fish this time of the year with the current flood situations and raised water levels along the river.
