Public forums not so much these days IF yer lookin for less peeps n company.

I hear ya Tom.  Normally I fish far away from everybody but with my mom's hospice and a 10 day trip to Maui in January I decided to stay close to McKinley Park this year and now a bunch of people parked around me.  No big complaints.  I will just move a little farther away from the masses.

Cancer survivor myself...prostate. Got it from my dad! Lucked  out and was dignosed early enough ( 52 yrs old). As Ronald Reagan once said... "I didnt have cancer, something inside me did, so I got rid of it!" My advice to all men, get you PSA levels checked regularly (simple blood work).  The worst thing to do when life gets you down is to stay down. Get up, get on, and get outdoors!

Anyone been out on the mail part of the lake?  Am headed out of the launch from Glenwood Lodge (at the end of mud creek rd) near rice bay and was hoping to make it down to the reefs on the may part of the lake on a Snowmobile or ATV.

I walked to my place last Friday night and then back to the Landing on Monday morning. There is still a small ice ridge on Head O Lakes running from north to south. The staked trail goes right across so be careful.

There was a beautiful full moon on Friday night. The single digit temps kept freezing my eyes together but it was great walking weather...! Get out an enjoy being outside. It's good for you!

All this banter bout this & that cracks me up.  Love reading it.  TW - I had the basil cell carcinoma between the top of my nose and eye.  After I came out of the procedure looked like I had been in a good old fashioned ice hockey fisticuffs.  Told folks the wife caught me looking at muskie porn and she popped me.  Glad to see the pooches are getting along smoothly, nothing like have a "crew" around lending a helping paw with everything.

I was fishing one of the smaller lakes in the area tonight, we had 8 1/2" of ice wherever I drilled a hole, slush on top.

The point is before I went wailing out on the ice with my pickup, maybe a guy should check the depth of the ice first, and just because there's 13"s in one spot doesn't mean the whole lake is the same.

Just a friendly warning.

Jim

Good advice and smart thinking as ice thickness varies from area to area and lake to lake no two the same . The storm coming and snow totals they are calling for should make for things interesting out on the ice also that said  just use common sense and stay safe.

Good morning all!  Does anyone know if the snowmobile trail is marked on the West End of the Lake up to The Landing?

The trail is staked and the conditions were great. It's snowing now which is temporarily good, but depending on how much we get, it could force water up and create slush.

I had 17” of ice out of McKinley Park when I arrived Wednesday morning so we added 2” more over last week. Tonight it will be -16f and tomorrow night -30f so it should keep getting thicker evev with the recent snow.

I came up up a day early to avoid the storm. Virginia got 8.1” through this morning so I assume Vermilion was about the same. I estimated about 8-10” so we may have got more. Wind is blowing pretty good now so the snow is drifting. My Ranger got stuck 20’ from the house in a hard drift so next week I will be taking the snowmobile.

Fishing has has been tough. Caught 6 eyes 10-15” Tuesday, only 2 yesterday 10-11” and no bites yet today after 2 hours. Hope it picks up.

Ended up with 6 small walleyes yesterday.  All but one of my fish were caught on rainbows; the other was on a sucker.  Couldn't get a bite on chubs.

Even with all of the new snow and many vehicles parked around my house, the water from the holes barely reached the blocks under my fish house.  Hopefully the 1½" blocks are high enough to keep the water off for a week or two.

No water on slush on them when I rode out Friday morning.  Was blowing out pretty good so they continued to drift over.

We received about 3 more inches of snow overnight. The wind is predicted to really pick up from the North so that will continue to change conditions. I did experience some flooding in areas closer to shore on northwest shorelines that were exposed to the wind pushing snow into them.  This was in the wake em up narrows area of the West end where we had 12 or so inches of ice. Was seeing areas with 2-4 inches of slush under the snow.

There was some slush in Frazer /greenwood area as well. Not a lot of it but this much snow on the 15 inches of ice we had will certainly have more slush to come

Lots of slush through the Narrows.  Fishing was slow.

Quad decided to quit running while out fishing.  Thanks to Dave for pulling me in.

Fished Frazer Bay off Breezy Point on the 30th. Fished 14' to 30' with little activity and no catches. Saw others fishing south side of bay further east and others off southeast end of Gold Island. Any of those folks on this forum? If so, how'd it go?

Had 19” of ice at my house so we added another 2” in the last week. Road going to Birch Island had some water/slush on it and there was a lot of slush around the island.

fishing has been tough. Caught 7 eyes both yesterday and today but all were under 12” except for one 16” at dark yesterday. Rainbows are still the best bait. Only caught one each on shiners and suckers.

Have a few questions on Vermilion. Will be traveling that way for a bachelor party this weekend  and would like to fish Saturday for a few hours.  We are staying at a place in Black Bay.  Can a guy walk out there with portables or would it be easier to drive around to one of the access points and go from there?  How is lake travel with a pickup?  Any resorts have plowed roads on the lake?  Thanks for any advice!

Black bay is about 6’ deep and typically has no plowed roads. Lake travel with pickup is asking for trouble. Plowed roads, snowmobile trails, slush, drifts, good luck with that. Plowed access is at fortune bay and McKinley park on the opposite end of the lake

Thank you for the quick reply!  I appreciate the advice.  Do any resorts have ice houses to rent?  We are 4 hours away and renting might be a better option.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
