Namakan Fishing Report Late Sept. 2018

Recommended Posts

bobmn

Rented houseboat from Ebel's 9/24/18 to 10/1/2018. 2 fishing boats scoured the lake for a week. Water temp started at 58* and ended at 56*. Caught a couple small walleyes, a few smallmouth and some small northerns. Marked many fish at 25-30 feet off main lake points but all had lock jaw. Tried everything. On sonar found bait balls with large fish trailing but no takers. Quite a few boats fishing but never saw a boat stay more than 10-15 minutes on one spot.  Weather was multiple cold fronts, snow squalls, sleet and ice pellets. Air temp was 27* Friday AM.

Hey bob! I was up there with a buddy the 27th - 30th. We kind of ran into the same thing. First couple days were real slow, picking up a fish or 2 here and there. Mostly in the 25-30 column. On Sunday we made a last ditch effort and we were rewarded with good fishing. We decided to try bigger water and found fish stacked up in 30-35 ft main lake points. We were slow  rolling bottom bouncers with lindys. We picked up quite a few northern. Some around 30”. We also caught several eyes biggest being 20.5” and a 5 lb smallie. All the fish were well fed. We were graphing bait clouds in 35 over 40. I’m sure all the fish were feeding on them. Those bellies were plump. It’s crazy how a 5 ft change can make such a difference. Fish were just more active a touch deeper. Had to fight the wind a bit but it was worth it

Fish: Thanks for the info. Do you know what the water temperature was on Sunday where you were fishing?

If my memory serves me correctly we just under 57* which I believe was the coldest we saw all trip. We were picking our fish up just east of magie island and the point just to the north. Pretty much running back and forth between those two. There’s an underwater hump that comes up to 20’ east of Magie. Most of the fish were around that but not on top of it.

Thanks for the water temps. Unfortunately my depth finder temp gauge was correct.

Poor people shouldn't be going to RESORTS.   That's what makes them poor people.  They should be fishing the free waters near their home.  If it sucks, they should do something about it, whether that is lobby the government to have someone else pay to fix it, or earn some extra cash and go somewhere that has fish.     I grew up broke, and didn't like it.  So as soon as I could drive, I worked my tail to the bone and changed my situation.  I didn't go on my first "resort" quality fishing trip until I was 25.

The forums used to be cool 5-10 years ago and people shared some, but yeah the last few years they have almost died when it comes to regional and lake information.  Even sharing information at the bait shop or tackle store has pretty much become taboo, its too bad sometimes as that was a good way to meet new people back in the day.    This 40 degree weather and sunny this weekend will probably wreck any chance of good ice soon.  Not happy about that to be honest.

Say what you will but since ice fishing took off over 20 years ago several resort operators I know on Lotw have made out like bandits. Their business has almost quadrupled using the same cabins and adding some fish houses. I'm fully aware of what it takes to run these places.

I have 5 Wild Game trail cameras and have had very good luck with them.  For the lower price they are a decent option.  I also have a Moultrie, Hunten, Wildview, Primos, and Bushnell.  My first 3 cameras ran on C-size batteries which were very expensive, so I replaced them with AA-battery cameras.

Copied from the other side but still, congrats. 😊   10 years is a notable anniversary.  Congrats!    I was checking to see how many I recognized.  A fair amount.  Then I saw you did catch me.
