I picked up one of these Jaccard meat tenderizers which works pretty darn good for these more questionable tougher pieces of meat.  I use it on a lot of things like thick pork chops or loins before marinating to help get it in the meat more. 🙂

If you have to use that on the ducks or geese you cook you're doing something wrong.

Got a tailgait shot for ya from today.       😊

Thanks! Here are some pics.

Well it hasn’t been stellar but it hasn’t been a waste of time either this morning.  What I’ve been hearing is the hatch was poor in prairie Canada so we should see fewer but more mature birds.  Seems

Yeah it was just a suggestion for folks marinating and grilling Geese, not Ducks.  We cockered our geese most of the time.  😉

Great idea. I have one of these but its white. I used it on the goose breasts but not enough apparently. It was easy to cut, just a little tougher than sirloin she commented. Next time I'll use it more!

I've never used it on duck breast. Just salt and peppered, wrapped in bacon and then into a pan with hot olive oil or on a grill. I like the pan and hot olive oil though. The bacon is more of an accompanying treat.

When I wrap duck breasts in bacon, I cook till the bacon is done.  Then the duck is just right.  R - MR depending on the heat.

Rare duck is like meat candy. 😋

Here comes the “Second Opener”.

I’m planning on being in the Crow Wing/Cass County area for just the weekend.  Reports have been mixed, with great numbers one day; hardly a bird seen the next.  We’ll be looking to toss some muskie baits around too so if the birds aren’t thick, we won’t be bored!

This fall seems to have come with serious intent.  Snow already falling in parts of the state and birds on the move.  BW Teal have reportedly left central and western MN.  Some GW Teal have shown up instead.  Big flocks of mallards were reported to have come through and now I’m hearing of divers (including a canvasback) and snow geese already making a presence.  Holy cow!  Is this season going to be short?!  How long till freeze up at this rate?  Better get out there while we can!

I am in total shock no ducks around my dads pond. This the first time ever I have not killed a duck off my dads pond in 25 years. It’s crazy. What would cause this? The pond is full of freshwater shrimp.

Early migration. Tons of birds took off with Wednesday's wind...

We saw way more divers than usual for this time of year and fewer mallards. There were still woodies and I saw 2 BWT.

We got 5 birds today with about 10 shots fired.  Lots of high ones.  3 mallards, a ring neck and a red head filled our bird bag.

We fished maybe 4 hours this afternoon/evening and were able to raise 4 muskies total; one was a toad.  One hooked and landed.  41 inches.

Whatevs.... 😀😀

Of course you did have one of my bucket list birds - a pintail on your tailgate.  So you get a little more cred with that alone.

I had a productive day yesterday.  Shot 5 ducks in the morning and then caught 11 pike, 2 bass, and 2 muskies in the afternoon.  Duck hunting wasn't quite as good as it was on opener.  I just didn't see as many.  Fishing is still pretty good though, water temp was 54 degrees.

Knocked down a couple this morning.

I just sampled some goose bacon today.  It was pretty darn good.  Calling it “bacon” seemed a little off but I don’t know how else you’d name it.

Basically ground goose, seasoned and pattied then smoked.  Sliced fairly thin after the smoking.  Similar to how I smoke my whole breasts except the grinding part.

Looks like you could have a couple extra to experiment with!

We shot 10 ducks on Sunday.  Ringers are definitely in.  The muskies eluded is in the afternoon.  One 30 inch pike came to net.

The mouth of the creek is quite a ways downstream from the landing, and you’ll have to cross several peoples’ docks. Entire stream is surrounded by private property. Sure, you can technically legally access the stream, but why would you want to bother with the headache of dealing with landowners that DON’T want you there? Stream is small enough to step across in most places, it’s very weedy, and lot’s of overhanging brush. Not to mention, below average at best numbers of small trout!   You want easy access? Buy a Wisconsin license! Right across the river in Pierce County alone, there’s hundreds of miles of public easements on trout streams that are ten times better than anything Minnesota has to offer!

Pike suckers are about 3½ inches long.  Walleyes really like them in the fall and early winter.  Caught my fish in 13-15 FOW drifting slowly.  Good solid bites.

Got up Thursday evening to rain and pretty heavy wind Friday morning had us holding off on putting the boat in the water. Fished briefly Friday evening at sunset and picked up an 18" and a couple smalls. Fishing was decent Saturday morning but no real size, everything was 12-15". I had one that looked to be 17"ish flop off as I was trying to flip it into the boat. All the fish we caught were in 17-22'. We were fishing around about a 6' top but never caught anything on top. They appeared to be relating to the structure but not actually on it. Tried again Saturday evening for a couple hours and continued to pick up small walleye just like the morning. Sunday was windy again but we decided to slug it out for awhile and caught one decent perch and one small walleye. We fished similar depths and spots as Saturday but they weren't there. Marked them out in 35'+ but didn't feel like fighting the wind out in the big water so we called it quits around noon and never went back out(the wind never really did lay down or we may have tried again). Jig/minnow way outfished bottom bouncers/crawlers. Wish bottom bouncers would have worked better because it was tough to keep a jig down as fast as we were drifting and we never found a school to spot lock on.

I am heading up there tomorrow.  Where do you guys get minnows up in the area?  Tower or Cook or down in Virginia?  I have never heard of pike suckers?  How large are they?  Are you guys fishing the East or West side of the lake?  Let me know.  I am thinking of fishing the East side tomorrow and then headed to the west side from Thursday thru Sunday.  Any help would be appreciated?  I am a newby to the area.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Crap I am feeling like an old man today. Hazel is not letting Finn and I take a nap, but it is getting Finn and I ready for duck season.
