A group of us are planning on getting together on Lake Osakis for the day on 8/18/18 for a day of fishing and a midday picnic at the Battle Point Park.  We would enjoy connecting with some fellow anglers from the site to connect and have some fun.  Osakis is a great lake for big gills, slab crappies, nice walleye, pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass.  The best walleye bite has been during low light periods.  Sunfish and crappie bite all day.  We plan on taking a break around noon at the Battle Point Park for lunch.  Right now tentatively looking to connect around 8-9 at the access.  Otherwise look for a red and white Warrior and connect with me, "Borch" on the water I'd you'd like.   I might even have a fishing report really fresh fishing report for you. 😃

Might be on the water in the morning but will have to leave a little before noon. Have an early afternoon appointment.  Will be sure to stop by the Battle Point launch around 8:00 or so.

We've settled into our camping spot and the fishing report is that the sunfish and crapoies are on fire.  Walleyes are very tough right now.  But bass and pike are also being very cooperative.

I fished most of the lake in scout mode today.  Found walleyes early on midlake humps and bars in 18-24 fow.  Got a couple to go on jigging raps but then they shut off.  Spent the rest of the day trying to pin down a panfish pattern.  Found good numbers of sunfish in shallow cabbage beds(6-9 fow).  None were huge but good numbers of 8-8 1/2" gills.  A few crappies are mixed in with them and some are suspending off the break.  There are also good numbers of sunfish in or just outside the reeds.   Most of the sunfish ran smaller though although there were some keepers there too.  Pike and bass I did not target but saw others do so successfully.   Plenty of bass in the reeds and spinnerbaits seemed to be what most were using.   Troll over the weeds and you will be rewarded with pike.

Decent walleye bite this morning once I figured out the pattern.  Jigging raps with a horizontal presentation on midlake humps.  So far the big fish is this 25" eye.

That's ok.  Was a good day on the water.  Took my wife out this afternoon and had a nice day fishing.

Did you find most of those in the afternoon? We didn't do so well. Tried for eyes on various midlake humps for about an hour and then changed tactics to panfish for about 45 minutes before we had to leave. Found one decent size northern pike but that was it for us.

Enjoyed having the opportunity to meet you, Borch. Too bad we weren't able to spend more time. Maybe next time.🙂

The eyes I got from 11 - 11:45 am.  The gills and crappies from 2:30 - 4:30 pm.  We did a picnic lunch and a boat tour of the lake as it was Wanda's first time on Osakis.   The panfish bite was very good.

Enjoyed our time as well.   Was hoping to see you before I went to get Wanda and left active fish.

Hey Borch, What do you mean by horizontal presentation for jigging raps?  How deep were the mid lake humps you were fishing?  I've been experimenting with jigging raps this year and have caught some on them, but not a lot.  One final question, I've been using size 7.  What were you using?  THANKS.

I was fishing 18-25 fow.  I cruised several humps that topped out around 17-20 fow and found fish on about 1/2 of them.  I only fished spots I marked good numbers of fish on them.

By horizontal I mean either making long cast and snapping the jigging rap back sharply or trolling 1- 1.2 mph and having enough line out that there would be a little slack before my next snap of the rod at that speed/depth.  You don't feel the hit.  The fish is just there on the next snap that then turns into a hook set.

I've also fished them vertically but many times the more horizontal presentation works better.  At least for me.

I caught fish on both 7&9 sizes.  But the 7s are easier on my arm with repetitive snapping of the rod.  These fish heavy and I've fished them like this in more than 30 feet of water. Metallic perch was the best color for me this weekend followed by rainbow trout or chartreuse.   Even caught several pike and crappies doing this type of fishing.

Moonshine shiver minnows work well too.  They get the nod when there is moss on the bottom.  They fish cleaner that the jigging raps.

A group of us recently made it up to Flag Island Resort for 3 days of multispecies ice fishing on Lake of the Woods. The accommodations and folks who worked at the Resort were top notch! Bending over backwards to put you on fish and make your trip one to remember.

The Fishing - Day 1 it was decided to stay, somewhat, close to the Resort in the MN side of LOTW to target Walleye, Sauger and Perch due to 24+ hours of snow. We got into pretty good numbers of fish and some quality fished showed up as well! Below is a video of that action from Day 1.

A group of high school buddies and some of their family make an Annual trip up to Baudette to fish Walleyes on Lake of the Woods. I look forward to this trip each year! Since this is an Annual Trip we all put some money and bragging rights on the line for the Angler who can catch the biggest fish of the weekend, take home the Trophy, $500 Cash and call themselves "Mr. Walleye" for the next 365 days. The Largest Perch and Heaviest Eelpout/Burbot also take home prizes. I didn't have the camera's rolling on Day 1 (which was lights out) but on Day 2 of the trip we were filming. It was fun day and I even caught my new Personal Best Perch!

@bassfshin24 and I snuck up to Mille Lacs for 2 days of fishing recently. We were targeting Walleye near shallow structure in the low light hours and bumping out a bit deeper during mid-day. The first day was slow for us but we found more action on Day 2 including my 2nd biggest Walleye through the ice. I also caught my first tagged Walleye! Pay attention for my slip and fall...

      Hello all,

I am new to the area and don't know where to begin fishing. I'm looking for a lake around Mankato that has walleye / crappies in it. I would like to make it out a few times this fall yet and then hit the ice hard. Any advice on what lakes to start with? There's so many that I don't know how to choose which one to go to.

We are looking to add a sales person to our Vadnais Heights, MN office. If you are unfamiliar with our company, we publish regional fishing and outdoor maps/information for the Midwest and East Coast. We’re well established and currently doing business at most your mom and pop shops as well as almost all the major outdoor outlets and big box stores.   We’re in the process of expanding into new markets and are in need of some sales support. This is a great opportunity for someone with no prior sales experience that wants to get their foot in the door and work for a growing company in the Outdoor field. Must be a self starter with excellent communication and interpersonal skills – AND must enjoy talking hunting and fishing of course….   Pay: Base Salary + Commission   If interested, please email me at [email protected] or send me a private message on this site.   Thanks and tight lines! -Nick

The way it's coming down right now.... don't look good for area lakes in foreseeable future😉 we get another 8inches and it will be snowmobile only  for a while

Try to keep in mind that the person you're talking to on the other end has nothing to go on but your description. It is not always that easy to explain things so another person who is only hearing the verbal or written explanation can fully comprehend what is being described. For example neither I or a colleague have been able to understand what this screw is you're talking about and we are both familiar with inline reels. Sometimes a  photo can speak volumes.   What I'm saying is maybe you're not being clear enough for them to understand the actual problem. Another tid-bit that may be helpful. Try to keep your composure and contain your frustration. It's most likely a failure to communicate that is causing the problem.

Yup, I walk from the Landing so about 4.5/5 mile trek. It's not too bad when there are snowmobile tracks.   I appreciate the offer CigarGuy. I may take you up on it some day. As I cruise through my 40s, I'm enjoying the walk and what it does to help keep me in a semi-recognizable shape! My other family members don't enjoyed the shorter walk much better.

I left up there this morning. I haven't seen the snow so packed down from snowmobiles all the way back towards your place. Should be able to have a fairly easy walk.....however, supposed to get some snow tomorrow and chances over the next few days. Do you walk out from the landing?  If I was in there when u come, I'd give you a lift/tow on my sled.
