New neighbor decided he likes to feed deer in the winter, and he does so right on our side of his yard.   The food attracts many many deer, and so our yard now has a big mudhole as well as bushels of deer pellets.    (free for the raking).

Nobody on the road is very happy about him feeding the deer since they tramp around the area and stand on the road and so on.

He didn't sound like "oops won't do that anymore" but more like "no big deal, it will wash away and the grass will grow back"

Anybody got any suggestions?   CO says "nothing that he can do", Town board isn't happy either but isn't convinced they can do anything.   I'm thinking that if they pass a rule, then I can take him to small claims court every spring until he stops wrecking our lawn.

Molotov cocktails are a last resort.   I am thinking of a fence that I put up in the fall to funnel the deer away from my yard.   Snowfence is too short but might help discourage them....

I really don't want war with the neighbor but this can't go on.    I'll talk to him again and see what he is thinking....   Maybe a letter from all his neighbors...

I need ideas...

A letter from all the neighbors or a neighborhood meeting with him sounds like a good first thing to try. Maybe he'll get the hint. Better than war.

Fence and pressure from the neighborhood is your best best until there is a law against it.

Good luck.

I agree with your neighbor , it isn't a big deal , your grass will grow back , and my guess is with the spring rains , all poop pellets will disintegrate and be totally gone soon , if they are not already gone ..  my question is what the heck are you planning to do with Molotov cocktails ?  If I saw you toss one at the deer , I would be calling that CO , and he WOULD have something to write YOU a ticket for . .  And if you flung one onto my property , well let's just say you would have a big issue to deal with yourself ,, that would be me !!! My suggestion is to just relax ..

Because I'm sure he was serious about Molotov cocktails.  Is there an eyeroll button?

Feeding deer, especially in the winter, is a really good way to spread disease. Maybe you won't have to worry about them as much next winter after all

Send him some literature on CWD. Like FishingCT mentioned, disease spreads at common gathering points where deer may rub noses. CWD, for example, spreads through a prion or protein that can spread this way.

This spread of disease is an example of why disease in raised herds is such a big deal.

I got a good idea........maybe have a couple more beers and not worry so much about your neighbors. In fact invite them over for a dinner and a beer and discuss your issues...that's how my neighborhood settles issues.  Man to man...works out pretty good....

Tried that.  Pretty much got the bigfatbert response.  total blowoff, didn't even really acknowledge the neighborhood concerns.     I guess we will see if he does it again this winter.   Neighbors on other side have a 3 year old.  They weren't happy with the piles of poop in their yard either.

I'm starting to wonder if he is one of those guys who just does what he feels like without much consideration of the neighbors.    Don't know yet.

I have a problem with feeding deer. I have found that you just can't educate people though. If he isn't breaking any laws there isn't much you can do about it.

I also have a problem with people that buy a place on a lake up north and convert the property to a "Lake Minnetonka" type setting. Not much a person can do about that either. To me the perfect lake place is one you have to look really hard from the water to tell there is a cabin there because the shoreline is left unspoiled.

I guess it comes down to people having the right to do what they want on their own property unless laws are made to prevent it. You can't fix stupid, that's why laws are necessary.

and when you are at the cabin you can not see any other cabins!!!!!  or homes!!!!

I have had the place since 1984.  He bought last year.  It is a pretty well developed area.   If the deer he attracts stayed on his yard I would be ok with that.  Apparently he was feeding them right next to the line.    (btw the lots are 100 feet of lakeshore.  )

Yeah, it isn't that what he is doing is unlawful, it is just jerky.

The motion sensor idea is pretty good. Also, Northern Tool has a coyote decoy that looks scary as Hell. I have used it to keep Eagles from sitting on my dock and crapping all over it. It may scare deer away too. It may come down to some kind of a fence.

He upwind or downwind from you?   Clean all your fish and pile the guts on the same lot line all summer long.  Threaten to build an outhouse nearby?   Fight fire with fire, so to speak.  I'm partly kidding.  but only partly.....

I like the motion detector hooked up to loud noise idea. Aim the blow horn right at his house. Or a nice bright spotlight.

Put a food plot on your property so that the deer don't go over there!

I hear you Roony. My cabin is exactly what you described, but I rather lucked into finding a place that was heading that direction. Plus I've got 300ft of shoreline. In Del's area, the cabins are packed in tightly with yards. Yes he could let it go natural again, but that will take a decade or two and won't help his immediate problem.

Del - put some deer-feeding brochures from the DNR in everyone's mailboxes (not just his) and see if he learns anything. Otherwise, I'm with the others that in general you want to create a deer deterrent to counter his deer attractant. Something scary, something loud, maybe a bunch of wind chimes near the property line that scare away the deer. Shoot off roman candles into the air everytime you see deer near the feeder. That might scare them and create a negative memory. Maybe it's time for you to adopt a deer-hating dog for the winter?

Unfortunately I am a seasonal resident, although the neighbor on the other side and I are thinking fence.  Hoping a snowfence would be enough to funnel them away from us and on to others.   I'll talk to him again this weekend and see what he says.

I do have a couple people I know on the town board and they aren't big deer fans either.  They just don't have much in the way of ideas about how to proceed.

Nope, just hoped for some insight as to what to do, beyond obvious.   It's a Vermilion forum and the location is Vermilion.

Maybe look into plants that deter deer?  Plant a row to try and help keep the deer off your property?

Does the new neighbor live there year round? or seasonal?

I can understand his enjoyment of watching the deer.  I also dont see the big deal with deer poop.  I havent seen what you have to deal with either.

Hope you find a reasonable solution.

A snow fence or some other kind of fence should at least cut down on the traffic. Deer are lazy just like people and will take the path of least resistance. I'm sure some will jump it but I can't imagine your yard will end up a mud pit again

Just got here on the way to Quetico.  Things have recovered a fair amount. Still some dead areas, but better.  Still some piles but less.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
