The chains are more for driving on the hard pack and glare ice. You actually have some traction for braking and steering. I bought the studded chains from tirechain.com. A pain to take on & off. The studs get stuck on each other but offer phenomenal grip. I now leave them on all year to help with weed clearing on the trails in the summer.

I've never sat in a UTV. What makes it so different than an ATV? I figured that it was just bigger with seating for two with a box in the back. Do they get stuck more often?

UTVs are wider (my Polaris Full-size Ranger fits 3 across), longer (with a nice big box) and much heavier than ATVs (1500 pounds for mine).  With similar ground clearance and tire size they will get stuck easier than an ATV.  The day I got stuck in the picture (severely drifted over plowed road) a 4-wheel drive pickup had much better luck going down the road due to better ground clearance.

Something to keep in mind on a UTV with a cab - they sit much higher in height because of the roof/cab.  My friend can't park his in the garage while its on the trailer because of the height.  He has to physically unload the UTV from the trailer and then park the UTV in the garage on the ground instead.

True facts. And if you want to install tracks, it makes it even taller. Just things to think about.

When I bought my used ATV years ago, they guy gave me the old tires with a set of chains. I just store those in my woodshed during the summer and then swap wheels for winter. If you don't have a spare set, you can find them for free! One of these old tires had multiple leaks at both the stem and the bead. I went to my local Polaris dealer and he walked me out back to their pile of tires. When people buy new tires they toss them all out back and pay to have them hauled away. I found two new, barely used front tires for free that are now my new winter snowchain tires. I spent several hours trying to get those chains back on. It can really suck some times.

Thanks - that paints a good picture

Good tip to swap the whole tires and rims if you have an extra set!

I put mine on and left them since I don’t trail ride anymore.  Mine is pretty much used just for ice fishing and work around the yard.  I think they help when I pull the drag up and down our gravel driveway.

One thing on the install/de-install of chains on tires: let the air out!  There’s not a lot of pressure but it does ballon the tires.  Let the air out, install the chains for a good snug fit then reinflate to the recommended pressure and they’ll stay tight.  You can take them off without deflating but it does make it a little easier.

My Polaris Ranger barely fits under my garage door opening.  I have to prop the door open completely so it doesn't hit it.

Ya thats the issue my friend has too.  I should have mentioned that earlier but the issue is the garage door, technically not the size of the garage.

I put a light bar on top of my Prowler and almost ripped it off pulling into the garage. Another thing that almost got me was the bar hanging down from the quick release on the garage door chain drive track. Going to grind part of that off. Chains aren't in the cards this year, going to buy a new electric auger at the sports show tomorrow.  Happy wife, happy life 🙂. Hope we don't get all the snow they're talking about, that will really screw things up!

I had to adjust both my garage doors springs to open my doors further. I was going to mount a light bar on mine for ice fishing but now i don't think I can. You also need watch out for the rope for the release. I closed it in my door and closed the garage as I backed out.

Any ice update?  I see vermilion got about 11 inches of snow yesterday.

I was out on Saturday on the southern shore of Wakemup. We measured 4-4.5" of solid clear ice consistently where we were. There was still some open water in the middle HOL bay I could see from where we stayed.

I'm sure with the cold and new snow things will be changing quickly- hopefully not too slushy.

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
