I have a week trip planned for opening week on the big pond.  Should I reschedule?  I know the record ice out for that lake is May 16th. Does it look like that will be broken this year?

Sure does't look good now but things can change in a hurry.  Pretty darn tough to break all time records.  Same discussion going on at Vermilion which is May 23rd.

If I had to bet the farm, I'm wagering the big pond being ice free the week of May 6th IF long term forecast is reasonable close.

I read recently that Mille Lacs generally loses its ice about a week after the other smaller local lakes in the area (Onamia, Shakopee, Farm Island, Platte, Sullivan, Borden, etc).  So maybe keep an eye on those to see what their progress is.  I also read that some of these bigger lakes further north usually lose their ice about 13 days after Lake Minnetonka.  So that's also something to watch.  Minnetonka's all time latest ice out date is May 5.

brrrr

if the long term forecast holds, I would guess the lake will open up really close to opening weekend. like Friday through Monday. there will probably still be some ice floating out there for a few days after that. it really depends on next weeks weather. its going to be close

There were trucks out on Isle Bay yesterday, and ALLOT of snow remains on the main lake. I think significant open water for the opener is a long shot at best.

I'd be surprised if the lake is entirely open by Opener. I almost needed at auger extension eight days ago when I was up there.

Drove around the entire lake today. From the road it looks like the warm weather has melted most of the snow. Only saw about a half dozen people fishing. Ice isn’t pulling away from shore yet. Stopped at the Borden access and walked out a bit, kicked myself for not bringing the fishing equipment, easy travel out there.

For those interested in current conditions Red Door has a webcam and the north end typically goes the fastest or at least that is what it seems.  I'm all for a late ice out, similar to 2013 when the last really good year class of walleye were produced.

My buddy Tony (@bassfshin24) and I hit the road after Christmas to go and chase some Walleyes on Mille Lacs Lake. We had plans to fish shallow structure during the low light hours and then head out to deeper structure during the day using an ATV. Day 1 the temps had warmed up some from the recent negative temps but we were surprised to find a very slow bite. The slow day was topped off by some ATV problems which left us scratching our heads on what to do for Day 2. As it turned out our options were minimal so we decided to pull out on the lake by hand to some shallow structure. It was -15 when we hit the lake but we were greeted by a bunch of hungry Walleye!

My first foray into tv land.  Grant invited me to co-host an early ice episode on Mille Lacs last week.  We showed up like any weekend warrior with no intel and proceeded to try to figure the lake out.
This is just the teaser.  The full episode will air in January and then be available on Superior Angling's YouTube channel.
Give it a share/like if you enjoy it.  Thanks in advance!

I drove by pleasant lake tonight near Rockville and it was about 90% open,  With this wind and rain coming I'm sure many will be ice free by the end of this weekend again.  Anyone else seeing any lakes open up?

Got on the west side yesterday from 10 till 3.  Smallmouth were snapping in 15 - 17 FOW on green tubes with red flakes.  Three 20 inch plus footballs. 20 fish total.  Two came up barfing out crawfish.  Had two incidental google eyes 14 and 15 inches.  All the fish were extremely fat and well fed.  Great day on the water, very few boats.  Shout out to Terry's, great place to launch and close to the action!

It's shaping up to be a very good year on the Big Pond....Lots of people are catching lots of fish.  Let's start a new thread to share some tips, tricks, and photos.
The talk I'm hearing is that there are lots of fish out deep, but most of them are shorties.  Fewer fish up shallow, but a better chance at catching some bigger ones.  So shallow I went.  Plus, pulling a 100 lb. sled and auger made the decision a little easier, too.
I set up Stick in Mud the Elder in Secret Spot #3 in about 7 ft of water.  I hole hopped outside in depths ranging from 7 to 14 ft. It took us maybe 10 minutes to get our first fish, and throughout the next two hours we ended up catching six more.  Nothing crazy like the reports/photos I'm seeing/hearing from others, but we got two keepers and one big girl.  My buddy caught 16 last night--and sent me a photo of every single one of them--but only one of them was over 18''.  Of our seven, two were about 19'' and the big one was about 25'', give or take a bit.
It's time to get out on the ice.

With all the ducks I am seeing next weekend should be a fun time. I am going to be chasing Ducks in the morning and deer in the evening. I am jacked up for this duck season. My cousins husband said we will be doing more diver hunts this year. I am thinking I will hunt my dad's pond opening morning, because I will be deer hunting the field that afternoon.

This story is part of the reason I try to avoid public hunting areas.  Hunters showing up late, setting up nearby, shooting at birds out of range, etc just ruins the hunt.  Put it this way: if there is a chance other hunters will be around, I won't be.  You've got a good threshold of patience Wanderer.  Way more than I do for a situation like that.

We checked there second - it was way too crowded for what we were looking for.

I have several friends that either live there or have cabins in the area.  And I now drive through Hill City when I go to Ely.   We’ve been deer hunting around Emily for quite a few years now.  I guess you could say I spend some time there. 🙂

Wanderer, do you frequent the area often?

Well we’re back home and tired!   We tried to get lost as best we could in the Itasca/Cass counties area.  Looking for carry in accesses to kayak into duck hunting heaven. 😅  So was everyone else and they had jon boats with mud motors.   We had a great time despite some negative highlights that really affected everyone’s hunting.  We found a roost during scouting on Friday, along with a great campsite to stay.  The roost and campsite were 2 miles apart though.  We scoped out the closest spot we dared set up the following morning cuz, Don’t shoot the roost, right?  Paddling by 3:30 am we got our spot, not flushing too many birds out.  Sure enough a boat with 3 guys churns past us later and deep into the roost.     Sure enough again, birds blow out but settle back down.  We still think we’re in a good intercept spot with a convincing decoy spread laid out.   Low and behold, 8 minutes before legal shooting hours the three guys open up a barrage of shots that starts scattering everything to the wind.  Birds are whizzing by us but we hold our shots.  5 minutes to go and they open up again.  At 2 minutes to go the rest of the groups in the area start popping off.  Everything is flying high now and showing NO interest in decoys.  We have birds going over us but too darn high.  Not for everyone else though, they’re blasting at birds higher than the tree tops.  Sigh...   The three guys churn back by us maybe an hour into the day - limited out I’m sure.  We were the last ones back to the “carry in” access and were greeted by a group of 4 with 2 boats that scouted Friday also.  We know where each other were hunting.  They had that look on their face like they were expecting some answers.  That was enough for us to say “It wasn’t us!”     It was a civil conversation after that. Local guys, upset with the shenanigans as well.  Three groups were able to get just half a limit with the tough shooting after the blowout.  All pass shooting; nothing coming to the dekes.  Those birds are spooky and know their safe distances.  Such a difference than expected.   We put plenty of miles on the truck and about 15 miles paddling looking for Mecca.  It’s a tough game around there that needs some more time to figure out.  But it’s a fun area to look at.  Short of not coming back with limits of ducks, it was a good, long weekend.
