Milwaukee Fuel 18V and 8 inch auger

Question

shaneD

So I just came back from Lake Winnipeg, and the 3 feet of ice they have there and found my auger lacking. I gave up the gas auger years ago to switch to the clam plate and drill. Around here, even Bemidji where I fish the most, I have never had a problem with getting through the ice. Lake Winnipeg is a different story.

Anyway, I have a 6 inch bit now, and when with drilling a couple holes side by side to deal with the big fish but thinking back to my old 10 inch strikemaster I was almost willing to deal with all the issues I had with it to have some space to wrangle a fish. Soooo, im looking at going with an 8 inch bit, with the Milwaukee and the clam plate. I know that clam had a gearbox in the past that would help with that but seems they no longer offer it. will I tear up my drill with the bigger auger? I have two 9 amp batteries  and double the torque now too so I'm figuring a few  extra holes compared to the five amps and 650inc pounds I had for the previous drill setup.

Suggestions? thoughts? other than getting a gas auger, cuz that isn't happening.

You've already invested in the 9 Ah batteries, picking up a Milwaukee Mud Mixer or 2704 bare tool will get you more torque.
Pair that with a 8" Nils and because of the thicker ice look for the 8" with the longer shaft.

You can order the plate with the gear box and it helps a ton with the 8 inch auger.

Got a Milwaukee Mud Mixer bare tool eBay new at $169.00 3 day free shipping on Tuesday. Put it on my Clam Plate. Use my 7" auger. No need for gear box on clam plate speed selection 200, 300, 400 & 550 on switch. Speed controlled by volt/current. 7" ran best at 300 on 2ah battery. 6 holes & still had 1.5 bars. At 400 killed battery on 4th hole. Love the reverse to clean out holes. This thing is awsome. 5ah battery arriving Monday.

I have the mud mixer with my 8" kdrill.  Works sweet but seems to drain the 5.0 amp batteries quite quickly.  Im thinking i need to get a couple of 9.0 amp. I am also using 30" of extension so I can get through the ice with my Glacier up.

My parents were up yesterday and Wednesday and they did pretty good. Out in the mud in about 33-34 feet. Lots of boats were trolling but they did well looking for pods of fish and then spot-locking over the top of them and jigging with leeches and frozen shiners.

Is the water starting to recede on the lakes East of Orr? I heard it was really high on Myrtle. We're coming up to Black Duck in a week or so, just wondering if things are getting back more towards normal.

I’ve fished sylvan heavily the last two years. Done very well. Many nice pike, bass, walleye, and bluegill. For pike trolling shadraps pretty much any where will get you all the 20”-25” pike you want. Plenty of dence cover all over for bass and that is the usual bass presentations. And for gills in the spring the channel between the two bays was VERY good this past spring went three days in a row and got 2 limits each time ( two angles in the boat) and relesed many many more.  Also the panfish limit on sylvan is 5 per person so be aware of that. I was out there 2 weeks ago and did ok. Again two limits of nice gills and a handful of pike but it took a lot of work to find them. I’m unsure of the walleye fishing out there but have heard it’s a good lake. Im not an expert on sylvan but know a little so hope this helps ya out. Good luck!

The last two times on the river have been slow to say the least. Trolled Shipping channels, river channels, and all the flats. Crawler harnesses and crank baits. Anybody having any luck out there?

If the water is that clear and you can see 17-20 feet down, the fish will be very spooky.  And if the sun is out, they will be looking for relief from the sun in the form of shade.  Night time might actually be a better option.

Not terrible.  But they can be merciless, I will tell you.
