You forgot all the range pits! ;)

I've always wanted to try Tofte, but if I'm driving that far it will have to be Burntside.

Most people fish with panfish sized lures and light line. I used walleye sizes jigs and caught lots of big rainbows and good sized splake. Lake receives lots of pressure but has large fish.

Larsen lake state record splake, 17 pounds. I fished Larsen lake a few times, still skunked. I have caught lakers over 8 pounds in lakes that said there were nothing but little ones.

Not saying lake surveys are sacred scripture, but they definitely have pointed me in the right direction, rather then a hunch. I guess most people would much rather fish a lake that has/had (if the fish was sampled via gill net) what they're after then not. Lake surveys are the biggest help out there, if you now what to look for. Almost a broken record to hear Pros say " Do your homework and use Lake Finder" LOL! Tight Lines!

Btw, here's the state record stats on Splake....

Trout, Splake

13 5 33½ 19 Larson Lake Itasca 2/11/2001

In 1996 the MN state record Splake came out of Tofte Lake. The fish weighed 10-pound, 7.04 ounce.

They told me there were no big lakers in burntside when I was in college too, but I got 36 incher on my wall. If you guys don’t have anything positive to say let’s not say anything. This not helping new people want to post.

I'm sorry that you feel posting current real data from our DNR over past records is not being positive or helpful to new folks on the forum. I agree that as ST stated below in 1996 there were some good size fish in the lake. It has been fished hard since that record came out. To give new folks old data or make sensationalize claims on a lake is doing a disservice to them, and may just send them on a long drive Goose case up to a lake that may not produce what was claimed. That can only hurt the credibility of the Out-Door site that it was given on.

Giving usable information is the best way to serve new members as they may come back for more. ;)

" In 1996 the MN state record Splake came out of Tofte Lake. The fish weighed 10-pound, 7.04 ounce."

By the way, I have also caught a 36" Laker on Burntside.  :)    You can adjust the wording or delete this as well if you choice. ;)

There is still good sized splake in tofte just because they do not show up in the nets. I personally have seen big ones this last fall while grouse and fishing in the area. Did the bite nope but the where cruising and chasing minnows my guess is some were pushing the 30 inch mark. I never claimed the lake is full of them but they are there. It take different tackle to handle fish of that size. I did catch some big rainbows up 21 inches that is a big rainbow for our trout lakes. My biggest splake came this fall on the same trip and was 23.25 inches the meat was so red and tasty.

All from Tofte

I guess I should read the regs once in awhile. I had no clue they changed the spearing opener, it was December 1st for as long as I can remember. Doesn't matter this year, still isn't enough ice to get out. It was around 16 last night so we probably made ice, but I'm going to need a few more days of single digits before I get out. Were booked for tomorrow, not sure yet if it's going to happen or not. Jim

I went a day last week for the first time this season and folded up two roosters in about an hour and a half.

Was up this weekend, checked ice off North sides of Moccasin point and Breezy point. Both had 3-3.5" near shore but quickly dropped to 2-2.5" before you got 100' feet out. Not enough for me so retreated back to shore

We went for an ice scouting trip yesterday afternoon.   First lake we went to had sign of people fishin earlier in the day, I took the spud walked out 20' from the landing, 2 hits and the spud was through. Wherever anybody walked there was water in their tracks. No cars at the landing, and I didn't see any big open holes, so I figure they were lucky.   Went to lake #2 didn't even get out of the truck. Somebody had driven a wheeler around  to the west, and cleared a bit of snow to make a skating rink, open water straight out from the landing. Nobody skating, wonder why.   Went to lake #3 there was a half a dozen guy's fishin a half a mile out in the lake. I grabbed the spud, went out on the ice, chopped three different holes, the most it took was six hit's from the spud, and I was through. I'm thinkin 3"s of ice, and figured my guess was a little generous. I couldn't see where any of the guy's out fishin had even tried spudding, or drilling a hole, they just followed the other tracks out. Where they were fishin it was open last Sunday. I didn't see anybody catchin fish, and we were there at prime time. One group was spread out over a pretty good sized area, the other guys were standing in a group, with all kinds of junk around them. I have a word for those guy's, but can't post it here. LOL   I want to go fishin pretty badly, but there is a fine line out there that I'm not about to cross. We got in the truck and left that lake too.   Didn't even stop at Vermillion, can't believe it could be any better. The 3 lakes we looked at were all less than a 1000 acres in size, the one with the open water, right around 250 acres.   No body ever accused me of bein a genius, but I'm not about to risk my life to go fishin. LOL   Spearin opens on Tuesday, I'm chompin at the bit to go, supposed to get cold tonight, and tomorrow night, so maybe we'll make enough ice to go. At least where we spear you can touch the bottom if you go through. Our spearing lake is the one that took 2 hits. lol   Been there done that quite a few times over the year's, the older I get the less I want to get wet. LOL   The guy up at the baitshop told me he heard that Red lake had 7-9"s of ice, SURE.   Jim

      @Wanderer Thanks.

@grasshopper Hopefully we get some cold weather soon so you can use that 3rd tank on the ice. lol
