last night the north metro lakes were 50-90% covered. I am guessing the majority are locked up now. Hopefully making some quality ice over the next couple days.

The wind messed with the ice at the beginning of the week, despite the cold temps, so It will probably take a little longer than people think.

Lakes around me didn't lock up until Wednesday of this week.  Most were WIDE open as late as Tuesday evening.  Even though it was cold the wind was keeping them open. This weekend doesn't look like great ice making weather so we probably won't put on inches very quickly.  May take until the next bit of cold that looks to be in store for early next week, even then it looks to be a short lived cold spell with temps back up near 30 after.  Probably won't lose any ice but won't be making it very quickly.

I went to O’Dowd yesterday- guy was pounding holes in the middle of the lake (bigger seeds than me). Anywhere from 2-3 1/2 inches of decent ice. I’m heading out this evening. I’ll post pics of the ice and hopefully some eyes

I was on a small north metro lake today and found between 2.5 and 4 inches. One of the spud bar holes I punched started spewing water up so definitely needs a little more time.

north metro lake had consistent 2-2.5" yesterday around noon. Headed back tonight to check a couple  more lakes.

It would be nice to hit 4-5" before warm weather sets in  later this week

I also hit O'dowd today. Not prime fishing time though 11-3:00. Couple of perch and and a decent pike on a small crappie jig and minnow head. Bit like a walleye. Just sat there looking at jig, and just barely bit.

Fished O'Dowd yesterday from 10 am until about 4:30 and found about 6" of good clear ice in most spots, but I did find some thinner spots around pressure cracks that were only 3" or so.  Also found one weak spot just north and slightly east of the western point on the large island that was only 3" in about a 6' x 6' area.  Spud bar only took a couple hacks to break through.  Saw one 4 wheeler slowly going across the main basin from the landing.

As for fish, I had a few schools of pan fish come through and caught a few dinks.  Also saw one walleye on camera attack my puppet minnow jig tipped with a minnow head.  He was even hooked for a second and then spit it out.  So that was some excitement but otherwise it was pretty quiet.

15 1/4" on waconia where I checked Saturday. Did not measure yesterday when I put my house out but it was visibly thicker guessing close to 17" where I was. Sure its not like that everywhere.

Was out on Spring yesterday and had 17"+ of good ice. Great lake if you want to catch 6-8" perch all day.  We fed them lots of minnows so hopefully they will grow ;)

Anybody have an update for late ice?  I have been out of town for work so haven't been out in quite a while.  I was planning on going out Saturday, but was wondering what this warm weather has done to the ice around the Metro.

Fully locked up. 3-4" ice early in the bay
Looks to have had 4 explorers out already, by seeing their sled tracks.

I am renting a lakehouse on Lower Prior Lake early July with my family from CA. What recomendations are out there for some easy fishing that require the minimim of gear. Also any thoughts on trapping Crawdads....

Anyone catching anything on any of these lakes? I've been out pike fishing on Pierson and auburn last couple of afternoons to no avail- went out for night bite on waconia sat 9th and have been skunked everytime. Cold front the culprit?

      - Subscribe to this fishing report.
Ice conditions still vary greatly from lake to lake. While seven to ten iches of pretty good ice, due to our lack of snow cover, is common, still use caution.

Channel areas on Minnetonka, for example, may have much less ice than that. Walking, with or without a portable house like a Clam Fish Trap is a safe bet on Prior and Waconia, and many areas of Minnetonka. ATVs should be cautious, and I would wait to put out wheel houses, especially with another four day stretch of near-record to record temps that is upon us.

Panfish are biting on Waconia and Prior. They are working deep water already, 18 to 23 feet, probably due to no snow cover on top of relatively thin ice for this time of year.

Try the center of deep bays or coves, or the deep basin areas not too far from bays or shoreline points. We are catching bluegills all day, with peak time being early in the morning, and AFTER DARK.

Crappies are getting nocturnal, so try staying out after dark. Small jigs with waxies or micro-sized Gulp! are catching both, and a crappie minow under a float is catching crappies and even some waleyes and pike in these same areas. Good luck, and be safe!

Ice is going fast!  The sun is high and powerful, we're flirting with 70 degrees and the forecast looks promising. I'm feeling pretty confident there will be a lot more open water then most are expecting.
    • Cliff Wagenbach
There will certainly be some areas of open water to fish by the opener! Pike Bay ice is deteriorating fairly fast now. Other small shallow bays are probably not far behind. Cliff

Almost time but maybe not quite... Although I did get the yak out of the backyard today, on to the trailer and up front to spend some time prepping it for time on the water soon.  Indeed it was fun getting out with you and the gang a few times this winter and looking forward to the next outings whenever they may be. WIll share what worked for me and look forward to reading some more info from others. Panfish is what I love going after and I had great fishing with gold jigs almost all winter. Did use a few other colors that worked also but that gold was hard to not use. Tear drop style tungsten in and 4 mm from Widowmaker Lures. Tried some from sportsmens direct also the last couple outings and liked them also. For plastics, the wishbone was good and also impulse mayflies and slug bugs. Tried and bought too many different things to try... LOL. Fished with shrimp for the first time ever this winter and that was a challenge and fun to try something different.  Started out with my good old ultralight gander mountain rods with the frabil titanium spring bobber and then bought a couple of the TUCR Inferno with the orange tip. I really like them for the 4mm and prefer the old ganders with a 3mm. Won a custom 32 inch power noodle from Kichler Custom Rods in Elk River at an event in Wisconsin and used it a few times yesterday. Very nice and looking forward to playing with it more. CGI inline reels still doing their job fine and I did grab one of the new Descent inlines and it worked sweet also. Nice that it now has a pop off spool instead of the gold screw off knob. 10 1/4 was my biggest gill and 14 for the crappie. Even went after catfish 3 times. Saw my first catfish tornado on the vex and iced a lot of fish after being taught how to use a bobber right for those super light biters. thx RickG   My highlight of the winter was getting a PB northern on a tip up up on Mille Lacs with stick in the mud. Fun City! My good old FL 18 is still working dandy and although I am tempted to upgrade, not sure if I will. Nills 6 inch saved my back from the hassles of the gas and when I put the Milwaukee on it life got even better. All in all a fantastic winter fishing with great guys and learning how to be a better fisherman.   Fish On!

Well monstermoose78 is done ice fishing around here for the year. Why you ask I fell through yes there was 28-30 inches of ice on the lake, but the shoreline nope. Went fishing with @Cret Jigs and we had fun fishing. I cut lots of holes and we got some good ones for the knife. Cret jigs brought a plank for the way out but on the way in I did not make it to the plank. Cret jigs helped me get my stuff to the shore and out. I worry about the guy on the wheeler and they guy who used the plank to get out too. Thanks Cret jigs for a fun day.

To all you guys who’ve been keeping us posted, thank you. I’m an islander so I don’t have much hope for the opener, but I’ve been reading all the posts (read them year around), including entertaining posts on new gear, and, again, thanks for letting a lot of guys know what’s going on there. The current weather, forecast and web cams, give me hope! I’m thinking I may get back home in three weeks, maybe four. Keep the sun shining, Dick
