When I was at Gibbins right after Christmas, I think the houses were on about 24 ft. or more. You might be a long way from the shallows. Also, Bryant and Jacob have plenty of room on the vehicles, but it fills up quickly. I stayed in the house for 3 nights, and was happy with the fishing. A combination of hooked minnows on bobbers and using the jigs supplied in the sleeper seemed to get the best results, using an FL-8. Good luck.

Should we bring our portable houses so we can scout around and maybe fish shallow for the evening bite?
Would it be worth it if the weather is'nt to severe?
Will they drag them out there to the sleepers?

Can we drive our 4x4 pickup trucks to the houses?

Finlander - I believe you can unless the snow gets deeper. They were driving 4x4's out there yesterday.

We are heading up and going out of Gibbins Fri-Sun this week and this morning I talked to Bryant and he said we could drive out in our vehicles and there was 24" of ice.
Our first trip so it will be a slow week of work waiting till time to go....

I dont know about you, but I wouldn't bring the portable again. I brought it up last year, and I diddn't even touch it. You will stay busy in the sleeper, and it's WAY more comfortable!

I'm heading up soon and my friends and I have been bringing our snowmobiles and portables for the last 5 years, and we rent a sleeper house. Last year we shouldn't have hauled all the gear because of the lack of snow and cold, but this year there's too much snow to drive ATV and trucks to the reefs many miles from home base.
Some years the snowmobiles and portables saved the trip because the bite died in the sleeper!
With the ease of 2 Otter houses we can send out a guy and a radio, we call a "probe", to test the bite in different depths around the headquarters. grin.gif

Blacklabguy,
Finlander and I will be up at Gibbons at the same as you. We'll be with the Luoma group of 10 or more guys in two houses! Will have to keep in touch to see where the better bite is!

It sounds like a big storm is going to hit LOW in a few hours. I hope it does not put the Ki-baash on driving 4x4's out there frown.gif.

JonesHat11,
Sounds good, we have a group of 4 and are hopeing to fish URL on the way up Thurs. then LOW on Fri-Sun. We have been doing MLacs the last 20+ years so looking forward to trying LOW.
It sounds like they have radios in the houses and we'll have FRS handhelds that we can use also. Is there a "standard" chanell used by FM people on LOW ?
Pack tonite on the road tomorrow !!!

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
