2017-2018 Vermilion Ice Conditions and Fishing Reports

Still tons of ice! Did not see anyone out fishing today when we took the sleds over to trout lake portage to do some fishing. Probably not worth the effort of drilling tons of holes through 30 inches of ice to stay on the elusive crappies.

Reid,

Find ant trout?

Really have to get lucky and find the right spot for crappies with this much ice that is for sure!

Hope to get out after them in a week or so once this snow drops down!

No open water except right below the pike river dam.

I had 30" of ice yesterday when I was out fishing! 6" to 10" of snow/slush on top.

With a forecast for below freezing for the next 10 days, not gonna be melting much ice...

It's setting up for a spectacular fishing opener for those who can get to the honey spots, assuming that the ice is still peeling off of the lake!

Yup. I hate ice fishing and think the odds of ice out before opener is very slim. I'm already taking days around the following weekend and Memorial Weekend off expecting that will be my opener. Depressing

jparrucci,

The second weekend is usually better fishing and better weather and less people then the opener anyway but still a bummer to miss the OPENER!

At least the odds are looking better for shallow water lake trout in Quetico first week in June.  :D

Any water coming over the dam, by the hatchery? Thanks

No water that is visible! Must be some running under the ice on the dam though because there is a little area of open water in front of the bridge and by the Hatchery.

We're going canoeing in Quetico first week in June.  Will the Ice be out?   World record for Vermilion is 5/23....   For that matter how about the opener?    Global warming my patoot.

DEl,

I think it is a new Ice Age! Should be seeing glaciers any day now!

-2 degrees here this morning! Certainly not loosing any ice yet! I would bet that we will have ice on much of the lake for the walleye opener at this rate!

Cliff/others-

I’m thinking about dodging the storm down here in the cities and heading to the cabin. Wondering about current travel conditions on the lake.  Any report you can provide would be appreciated!

Brian,

Lots of ice yet!

6" to 8" of hard snow on top of that. I was out on the lake yesterday with my truck and came close to getting stuck in the hard pack a couple of times! Snowmobile or 4 wheelers would have no problems.

The ice on the Pike River between the dam and the lake is opening up fast! Should be wide open in a couple of days at the present rate of melt!

The DNR will be trapping walleyes soon!!! :D The walleyes are already starting to move in!

Pike Bay ice is  also starting to deteriorate quickly!

Finally starting to look like we may get some open water for the fishing opener!

I always wondered,  are the walleyes coming over the dam?   or are they swimming in from Pike?

They are all coming in from the main lake.

Here are a few photos taken off of my dock which is straight across the Pike River from the Hatchery.

Only a day or two more before it opens up here on the river!

The second picture is looking toward the dam.

4/24/2018.....There is now a 50' plus channel open from the dam to out past the Hatchery!

Thanks Cliff for your Pike River deteriorating ice reports and pics . I. Really want to show my wife the hatchery when the action is really happening this year , I would assume you will be right on that when this happens , is there any way that you can give a shout out on here as to just when this scenario is happening up there . With the warmer temps being quite steady now , I would think the run will be rather strong this year when things get going ..

I will certainly keep you informed about the progress of the hatchery.

I expect to see the nets and traps go in within the next two to three days.

The run should be very strong as the fish are already moving into Pike Bay strongly.

Have a couple spots that are 10' open, I live on north side of Pike Bay, large rocks along shoreline helps heat water. Hard to see the ice condition on the Bay as there is a lot of slush on top, once that melts and the warm sun hits the ice it will go quick. Our new Chesapeake pup discovered she lives on a lake yesterday.

Looking at the latest images, the lake looks pretty iced over... are there any areas of thin ice / open water to be found? Not looking to fish, need to test some safety gear with a group. Any river mouths open or areas between Duluth and Tettegouche?
    • Bigfatbert
Yup !!   Also note the new one over change to 26”... it’s currently 28” 18”-26 must be immediately released , and one walleye over 26” may be included daily and possession. Kab , Namakan, Sand Point , Crane . These changes start on the 2019 opener .

So after the 8” of snow the other day the lakes are a huge mess. I was out for a snowmobile ride yesterday and went to a lake not to far from home. I like to ride out there a couple times a week. So I made a loop around the lake and the snow was about knee deep but had no issues. I was just about ready to head home and checked out an area I like to fish. Well.... I jumped a plowed road bank and sink in about 1 foot of water and slush. I pinned my sled and barley crawled along about 50 years to dry snow. So my weekend plans of fishing are done. This was a smaller lake so I’m sure all lakes are impassable. I have what I think id a good ice fishing sled. A Polaris 600 with a 136” track never had an issue before but with all the snow and slush now there’s no way I’ll be able to fish. The snowmobile trails haven’t beeen grommed after the last snow and I’m getting sick of riding the ditches. Anyone else annoyed with all this snow now? Thanks Mother Nature I now have nothing to do this weekend! 😥

Way to let "Quasimoto" go and perpetuate his/her goofy genes...  If I catch a bunch of funny-looking, humpy 13.5 inchers in the future, I'm blaming you! 😁  (...as opposed to the scrawny 9 inchers I'm lucky to catch...) Poor thing looks like it's gonna get stuck in the ice-hole!

I usually keep my sonar unit in the house because I put it on the charger every time I get home. Just for fun, the next time it does it, I might try just warming up the transducer and sending it back down the hole to see what happens. Thanks.
    • BobT
I didn't think of that! Probably should have glanced down the hole, eh?

Just another reminder that walleye/pike season ends on Sunday too for inland waters.  Don't get caught targeting the wrong species of fish next week.

New 2019 Regulations are out showing a slot increase from 17" to 18"!!
