Jigging Raps

Recommended Posts

ANYFISH2

Just started playing with these this week as a friend has been have goos luck all summer with them on the Cass lake chain.

I have not any success yet but not real sure on the best way to use them with my set this week.  My friend searches pods of fish out with electronics then spot locks and vertical jigs.

I have no electronics or spot lock so I have been control drifting and jigging.

My questions...

Is there a depth they work better in, shallow vs. deeper?

Better vertically jigged vs trolled vs casted and jigged?

prime colors? of course my be lake dependent.

typically, aggressive jigging vs subtle jigging?

Thanks for tips

According to Al Linder you can do it all with them...on his video that I watched a while back he was in deeper water throwing into 15 feet and working it back to the boat.  I have not tried it yet but will have to sometime this year.  Sand or gravel bottom would be the best.

I like drifting with them and snap jigging them with a controlled fall...Almost every time you'll feel that tick just as it's hitting bottom... Last time I was on mille lacs that's all I could get them to go on. As far as colors I'd just match the forage Tullies in the lake use blue,purples,silvers....Perch use perch colors.. I think the jiggin rap is my new favorite way to fish, but it gets scary with them little hooks when you got a big eye on lol.

My last trip to Mille Lacs I lost a big eye right before I saw it with the jiggin rap...Then 10 minutes later I hooked a 28.5" eye and that was the most scared I've been fighting a fish lol... Every head shake I was darn near dropping my rod tip in the water lol.

i use jigging raps down here on ice, and they almost always bring something in, northland puppet minnows are awesome too. girlfriend caught a 35 in muskie on a purple 3 inch jigging rap with a minnow head winter 2016. awesome lures . yeah al linder loves those things, i think he said its his favorite MN lure. i talked to a local on french lake 3 weeks ago . he said he never uses them, but he showd me lots of eye and crappie pics from french and fox through the ice. maybe they only work in iowa..for some stupid reason who knows. i tried raps today and yesterday on shields and roberds. no dice. custom jigs and spins makes a "rotating power minnow" similar to the rapala. but no nose hook. and tail hook isnt fixed, they look bad ass. check em out at custom jigs and spins website, i just found it not long ago.

good luck all

Has anyone been out lately? Just curious how the fishing has been and how much ice is out there? I’ve been out a couple times so far on a smaller lake near by vermilion. I had 5 to 7 inches consistently everywhere I checked.

I've used both and haven't seen a significant advantage for either. So for ice fishing with plastics it's usually not scented.   Just trying to hold the rod still in your hand can give the plastic enough realism/movement to cause a curious fish to inhale it.

On the south end...  The big lake is ice covered with scattered areas of open water.  We have a nice start to making ice so when colder weather hits, things will get locked up fairly quickly.  Mother Nature gave us a cold blast to get things started but with milder temps this week, things are on hold.  There is some spearing taking place for pike this week on back bays such as Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay.  Resorts have spear houses available.  Regardless of where you fish, work through a resort for safety. On the Rainy River...   Most areas of the river are covered with a thin layer of ice with some areas of open water.  There is no traffic on the river at this time while ice is forming.  Extra caution is always needed with current and this year the current is stronger than most years.  Back bays of the river are also iced up. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice is forming nicely throughout the Angle.  Locals have been out monitoring ice conditions and progress is being made, but no ice travel is recommended yet.  NW Angle resorts will communicate when ice fishing begins.

You guys...  🙄 This is like the old joke: Ole went down to the public swmming beach at the local fishing hole.  He hoped to impress Lena and all her fine lady friends by wearing his tight swim trunks that showed off his "manliness."   Lars politely warned Ole that he didn't exactly have much to show off; Lars recommended perhaps Ole should tuck a potato into his Speedo.  Ole did.  After strutting around, he was extremely disappointed:  Lena and her lady-friends only point and laugh/giggle/snort and roll their eyes... Ole asked Lars, "what's the deal?"  Lars told Ole, "next time, try tucking the potato in the front."   Sorry to break it to you fellas, but a deer's anatomy isn't like ours.  The ladies keep their mammaries in a different location, ya understand...

Does scented make a difference? How about some different ones for walleyes?
