I don't if you saw but the South Dakota bird counts are out and its ugly.  Down a whopping 45% from last season.  Evidently the drought has brought pheasant "carnage" to the state.  Its possible that the counts for North Dakota are even worse.

The drought we had  here in S D was pretty small relative to the areas of North Dakota that were dry. I was up in  South Central ND back in July and it was awfully dry up that way south of Bismarck. And I know further to the west it was even worse up that way. Sad part is that there was also good sharptail hunting as well as pheasants up that way also.

MN opener looks rough.  USDA reports that not even enough corn has been harvested to make tally a mere 1% rate and only 22% of the soybeans have been harvested.  Combined with high winds and a chance of rain, I think I'll wait until there's a better chance at seeing some birds than Saturday.

I'm gonna go but not before some of these crops get harvested.  It may not be until Thanksgiving but at least I'll increase my odds if I wait for a better chance of success.

I went 6 times in December last year and saw no less than 300 birds.  Most of those were hens.  If the majority of those survived, I expect it to be even better.  Of course, I can't actually verify that most of them survived until I see them and/or hunt them.

I wasn't asking you anything leech, it was for papadarv. He talks about it in another thread running smooth vs chipper blades ( you should look it up). So my question to him was basically how much tinkering did it take to get the right angle and shims to work is all.

Huum?  You:  I modified an old mora hand auger a couple of years ago to a drill which works well but still has shaver blades on it. Did it take much to switch over to chipper blades? Me: If you look at his pictures above.  He took the shaver blades and ground teeth into them  to make more of chipper blades.  He didn't switch to chipper blades. He made his own out of shaver blades.   Or am I missing your question?

You into the sauce again Leech?

Pretty straight forward for me in the light line category: Berkeley Micro Ice in 2, 3, or 4 lb test has served me very well.  There’s a reason stores sell out of it earlier than other line, even pre-Covid.

You do good work that's for sure PD. I'm wondering though,  I modified an old mora hand auger a couple of years ago to a drill which works well but still has shaver blades on it. Did it take much to switch over to chipper blades? These have shims under them which I suppose it's getting out drilling and perhaps trying with or without the shims to find the right angle..

There was a more in-depth article about this fish in the Star Tribune on Thanksgiving.  They broke through 100 yards of skim ice at the access to get to open water.  The air temperature was 18 degrees.   They were primarily ripping large soft plastics like bulldawgs and medussas, which imitate ciscoes/tulibees.

Haven't gotten this one stuck yet.  Does a great job of pulling my 8x12 Aluma Lite skid house.  Will be doing a lot more exploring with it this winter as long as conditions are decent.   The "ice road" out of Spring Bay last year was really just a packed trail made by a couple friends of mine pulling their skid houses with 4 wheelers and snowmobiles.  To my knowledge no one is plowing roads onto the ice on the west end.   IMO, not having miles and miles of ice roads on LV is a blessing for walleye populations.  LOTW had over 2.8 million hours of ice fishing time.

How is the ice for walking conditions on the East side?  From McKinley Park or Stuntz Bay to Ely Island?  Must be close to walkable.
