I don't if you saw but the South Dakota bird counts are out and its ugly.  Down a whopping 45% from last season.  Evidently the drought has brought pheasant "carnage" to the state.  Its possible that the counts for North Dakota are even worse.

The drought we had  here in S D was pretty small relative to the areas of North Dakota that were dry. I was up in  South Central ND back in July and it was awfully dry up that way south of Bismarck. And I know further to the west it was even worse up that way. Sad part is that there was also good sharptail hunting as well as pheasants up that way also.

MN opener looks rough.  USDA reports that not even enough corn has been harvested to make tally a mere 1% rate and only 22% of the soybeans have been harvested.  Combined with high winds and a chance of rain, I think I'll wait until there's a better chance at seeing some birds than Saturday.

I'm gonna go but not before some of these crops get harvested.  It may not be until Thanksgiving but at least I'll increase my odds if I wait for a better chance of success.

I went 6 times in December last year and saw no less than 300 birds.  Most of those were hens.  If the majority of those survived, I expect it to be even better.  Of course, I can't actually verify that most of them survived until I see them and/or hunt them.
