Took a 14 hour drive to LOTW last Saturday from Northern Indiana and stayed at the Riverview Resort because they could give me three consecutive nights of lodging. I would rate the fishing as decent but not as good as last year. Of course, it was significantly colder this year but we still managed to catch fish and have fun. I can't say any one technique was great but shiner minnows outproduced fatheads. I had my most sucess with a perch colored 1/4 oz glow devil dangling 3' off the bottom as a deadstick. I could watch the vexilar and see the sauger shoot off the bottom to nail that presentation. We fished 29-30' of water for 2 and 1/2 days. A plain gold hook and minnow with a spit shot was also sucessful. We stopped at Lucky Bait and bought a two tone jig in gold and pink/red that was also quite good at times. Overall a decent experience with the resort lacking quality, cooperative help. There is a lot of confusion at that place. The fish houses were great and the lodging was good. The food was mediocre and the help had uncooperative attitudes. Last year, stayed at Arneson's and found that whole experience to be better but we still have some good memories from this year. Just an honest opinion and report! Did not catch any big fish but lots of walleyes, sauger, eelpout and whitefish/tulibees. I think the glow devils and angel eyes may be a bit overrated! Thanks to all those that helped me with pre-trip information!<BR>

I agree with footdoc regarding the report on riverview. the service there is second rate to which we've recieved at any other lodges we've stayed at. They don't open up on time, no insight to the fishing at all, very negative attitudes. <P>Could be my fault though, I signed up at the sportsmans show last year in minneapolis all because the woman working the booth was a major BABE!!! Does she own the resort???<P>later, good luck and good fishin'<BR>fishgutz

<BR> FOOT DOC;<BR> Good Report! Just go over the Glow Devil part of the Report next time your out! OK!<BR>HA HA

Your report is consistent with my experience about 5 years ago. Haven't been back since. <P>Gutz, I too was spellbound by the hottie that owns/run's this place and booked the trip based on that and a lot of empty promises.

Good Honest Report FootDoc. Thats what we look for in a report. Glow Devils etc. arent over rated just over used at times. There are no magical lures out there. Glow devils really arent a deadstick lure they should be jigged to be used to full potential. The Glow Devils and Angel Eyes have worked real well for us when used at right time and place. Let the fish tell you what they want not someone on your screen. grin.gif

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
