Fun day today fishing with Rick G and Jim Uran. Caught a lot of fish and we kept some nice ones for the tummy :)  Rick got biggest at 12 3/8.  And we got into some neat looking party crappies also. LOL  @Rick G  @Jim Uran   Hopped in the shower as soon as I got home to warm my wet arse up. Sleet and snowy day. Enjoying a glass of Pinot Noir right now and fish fry time Thursday night. THX for the maple syrup Jim ! !

Wonder why disease ran so rapid in Cass Lk, within such a short time frame. Really sad to see. Classic example of VHS.

Really?  VHS?

I have seen similar infections, on rockbass in particular, since i was a kid.  On almost all bodies of water from BWCAW to the Mississippi.

I will have to look more into it but i dont believe that is VHS.

Sure looks like it to me, along with with some sort of fungus. This disease is far from common; thank God for that. I fish several river systems both in the St. Cloud area, Brainerd, and also the Le Homme Dieu chain in Alexandria, which are similar to the Cass chain and have never encountered it on any rock bass. As a panfish angler, rock bass get caught frequently, so I think I would have seen it by now. Not saying it isn't present, just not common at all.

Very sad to see.....whatever it may be.

This weekend saw me catching consistent nice perch--haven't found these in years!

I was jigging at 10-12 feet in ~20 feet of water with a pink/white 1/16 marabou jig--wife was usng a slip bobber.  Catching them suspended anywhere from ~5-16 feet.

We were fishing in a small northern MN lake with a terrible fishing reputation:  Mucky bottom, steep dropoffs, stained (but clean) water, limited species in the lake (no bass, no crappies) and a partial winterkill event in 2018 but quite possibly the prettiest lake I know!  (Surrounded by hardwood and 2 docks on the whole lake, neither of which even has a boat!).

(When I see winterkill in lakes I get interested since the remaining fish grow without competition and the perch are thriving!...--The lake is stocked with walleyes and the abundance of perch and bullhead forage means this lake could be a bit of a gem in another year or two...   DNR was actually scheduled to stock the lake with sunnies this year since they detected none on a winterkill survey in 2018, however we also landed 3 sunnies during the weekend--all over 8 inches and 1 just under 10.)

Had a good friend send me a report of some very nice perch being caught over on Big Stone. So, without really a game plan, four of us set out in search of some tasty perchies.

We hit the road at roughly 530am, headed SW... snow, and somewhat ice covered roads made for a little slower ride over to Ortonville?

We spent a good part of the morning set up in an area a couple of us had fished a few years ago. We had lots of activity,  pods of fish were coming through about every 10-15min... they weren't really biting very well though, and almost all were smaller. By noon I had 3 nice keepers and one over 12inches that I threw back.... my companions had pretty similar results. We opted to make a move versus grinding this spot out. This maybe turned out to be a bad choice...lol.

After spending roughly 3hours prospecting a few different areas, giving each spot about 20min, we ended up back in the first spot we tried?

We sorted through tons of 5-8 inch perch, picking up a jumbo for about every 15-20 smalls. Threw the whole dang tackle box at them... tried minnows, minnow parts, waxies and larve... and just about every plastic bait ever made to try and focus more on the larger fish.  Cant really say any one bait worked better than another. It was just one of those days...lol.

For my efforts, I brought home 12 good ones beteen 10-11.5. As a group we got about 35-40 keepers and threw back half a dozen biger ones.

Here's a pic from a good friend of mine who visited the land of tiger fish recently.

Yes, they are a totally different animal from what we chase locally. Bucket list destination ☺

I retired 2½ years ago.  My wife finally agreed to move up north after she retires the end of 2021.  When she retires there is nothing that would keep us in the cities.  Blaine has been very peaceful over these turbulent times, but I have a lot of buckshot for my three 12ga shotguns just to be safe.  Anywhere from Barnum to Soudan would be fine for us (easy day trip to Vermilion).  Would go as far west as Grand Rapids.  Would love to live on Vermilion but the prices are just too high now.  Best of luck to you.

      How far north?????🤔😅

Wife just retired. I retire next May. Hope to follow you north before the next round of riots and lotting in Brooklyn Center! 👍

Is it a hard stall like too much pressure that kills it or does it just die out?   The hard stall would most likely be caused by your pump locking up.  A die out would be fuel or maybe even spark, although less likely.   What pressure washer?

Repairing our house in Blaine for sale in the next 2 years so we can move up north.  Duck hunting, fall fishing, and sighting rifles in next week.  Winterizing our place in Soudan also.  Been a great fall for these projects.

I have a power washer that runs for a few minutes and then stalls out.  Can't restart it for hours.  The shop said it was a carb and so I replaced that and it still happens.  I thought it may be a problem with the vent in the gas tank but left the cap loose and it still happened.    Any ideas?   Thanks for your time.   Tom

If I had more time I’d fish between hunting outings but I have to be thankful to have any hunting time right now.  And believe me I slip it in whenever I can.  November will probably be better on that front but I need to keep working when there’s work to do being I’m seasonal now.   Granddaughters birthday today and then some home chores before getting back to work on Sunday till the job is done.   With the calendar migrating divers moving through the state right now I sure feel the urge to be out there!  I guess I’ll have to wait until the late season migration but it could be good!

My brother and dad were on Rice lake by Eden Valley Tuesday. They got one 23 inch walleye and a northern. All returned for the next angler.

I got a 3 day weekend (very rare); so today after my annual physical I spent the afternoon cutting Chinese Elms in the CRP. Was great temperature for it. Probably put boat away this weekend as most landings have docks pulled. Just don’t feel like battling the loading process. Do some deer scouting and maybe clean up the inlaws lawn at the lake. Will try to get the dog in the grass for a rooster also.
