Spent a few hours on Skogman yesterday. (3:00 to 6:30)  Most of the time the vexlar was so lit up that you couldn't see the lure. Bad news is that they were very small sunnies and crappies. Fished in the area of the cluster of ice houses in  24  ft water. No fish kept this time out. Good ice but getting a little sloppy.

Spent a few hours on Long Lake - off 47- There is a reason no one is out there . Good news was that the wet sloppy layer on top of ice has become solid. But it is very slippery. Could have used a little more snow.

It got it hard for two or three years

Last year I had pretty good luck on crappies on Long the the couple days I went. The problem With that lake is that it is stupid easy to fish.  So when it got pounded it really takes a hit. I am surprised that it made that much of a difference last year end of season it wasn't too bad.

Spent a few hours on Lake George last night. Caught some crappies, but they have " not" grown much from last year also caught some sunnies ( 3 inchers).

Lots of ice, access is is a little rough, there is  little snow on the ice and pertty darn slippery- best to have cleats.

May try Linwood or Martin this afternoon.

Well Martin was not the hot spot. There were plenty of people fishing- kind of gives you the idea that the fish may be biting.

Talked to several, and they were doing the same as myself. "Poorly".

Blue or Green this afternoon- what color do I choose?

Green it is-thanks for helping me make a decision. It's not all about catching fish- it's about getting out there.

Not so good for me. Way tooooo much activity! Fished from 3:30 to 7:30. One nice crappie and one small- it was there lucky day. Had a lot of lookers, but don't know what they were. Was fishing around the point in 25 ft water. Tried several bait combinations. May head back this afternoon. Shouldn't be as many people and this snow cover might help.

By the way my son was on Baxter yesterday - Small sunnies and perch.

Tried it again yesterday - I went toward the south side - 20 ft water. No (people) activity to speak of and not much for fish either.

No sorting required, left 3 small crappies go back home. I did shut down a little earlier than planed- that band of snow got me to thinking of how the road home would be. Glad I left early. around 6:00, 47  was covered and slippery. On the way to south side I stopped by the point and talked to a couple of young guys that had been there since 6:00 in the morning. They had 10 nice crappies and a couple of good size northern. Crappies were caught early.

Went to Linwood yesterday /night. Got my 10 crappies and a few sunnies. Too bad they were all 6 inches or smaller.

Fished straight out from the access in the 20 foot hole. All by myself. There were more fishing in the deep hole, don't know how they were doing. The access had some nasty holes in the ice, between two layers of ice. Should be okay after this cold weather.

Skipped a night (Thursday) but was back at it yesterday. Tried a local lake - Twin lake by Nowthen. Not too much to report again. Early action was small perch and small sunnies. Did get a couple of 9 " crappies after dark on a glow deman and small minnow.

  • 2 weeks later...

Fished George last night. Kept 6 eaters, nothing big but at least some action. Again it was hard to get them to bite, seemed like every time I changed the jig I would get a bite. Vexlar was red most of the time. Fished til 8:30 and the access had turned into a big swimming pool.when I left.

Take Care & Good Luck

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
