Had fun diver hunting but my partners sucked at shooting worse than me. First flock I let them shoot and I dropped one it was a ringer and Finn chased that suck way out in the lake and around. Ended up with one merganser and my hunting partners never touched a duck.

Same latitude as your turf but at the western end of the state yesterday.  Water temps are around 40 on the big water but the small ponds are freezing or capped already.  Birds are on the move big time including light and dark geese and swans.

Some small ponds that were partially open had a few birds on them that appeared to mostly be hooded mergs.

We had a spoony shoot with a few others mixed in. GWT and BWT (loner), gadwall, and buffleheads.  We saw blue bills and golden eyes but no shots fired on them.  3 man limit.

Just sitting out tonight in my blind, no gun, just watching.  4 hoodeds flew by and 6 GWT set in at less than 20 yards.  1 coot with them.

I just watched them all dabble to within 5-10 feet.  They are eating machines and competitive.  If you really want to learn how to set dekes, just watch the birds sometime.

Well deer hunting started off good for our group opening day buck from my brother! Then Sunday I seen a buck even though it was a button buck, so with no doe tags he will have a shot at making to next year. Tuesday I shot a buck. I shot and Found no hair no blood, but my cousin swears a hit it as do I. My dad and cousin are still up hunting.

Update !! My shot was deflected slightly and my cousin heard a fight and went found my buck. Still alive but could not get up. First photo is the exit the next photo is the entrance. Just low and forward. My cousin shot him in the next and did not get a shot at the coyote who was making all the  noise.

Holy muzzleloader hunters! I never seen so many people muzzleloader hunting in my life. Jumped a 8 pointer and I hope the Hunter made that shot count. Finn and I put on 4.3 miles and flushed one grouse that was out of range. We hunted tall grass, cattails, thick nasty brush, and shorter grass. I hope I got the deer moving for those deer hunters.

On the south end...  Walleyes and saugers sliding into a bit deeper water with 26-30 feet being where most are fishingl  Good numbers of fish continue to be caught with a lot of sorting the future small fish in the system and choosing just the right ones for a fish fry.  Make some noise!  Jigging with lures with a rattle or vibration has been effective in both catching and attracting fish.  Use your second line, use as a deadstick, a jig or plain hook with a live minnow under a bobber set at 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.  Electronics are helpful to show fish, how they are reacting to your presentation and when they are suspended.  Popular lure colors... gold, glow red, glow white, pink and green.  Nice numbers of walleyes over 28 inches caught this week. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, big pike, tullibees, eelpout and even an occasional crappie or sturgeon being caught on Big Traverse Bay.
On the Rainy River...   Ice fishing on areas of the river continues to produce some walleyes mornings and evenings. As ice conditions vary greatly on the river as there is moving water, we encourage guests who don't know the river to work through a resort for safety.  The snowmobile trail on the river from Baudette to Wheeler's Point to the NW Angle is open.
Up at the NW Angle...  With the border closure, there are four ways to travel to the NW Angle without crossing the border.  1.  NW Angle Guest Ice Road is open!  2.  Snowmobile trails across the lake are open.  3.  Lake of the Woods Passenger Service (bombardier).  4.  Lake Country Air.
Walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch with an occasional pike, eelpout, or tullibee in the mix up at the NW Angle.  22-27' has been the goto depth for most anglers.  No surprise, pink and gold have been hot colors, a LOW favorite with the stained waters.  Communicate with your favorite NW Angle resort for specifics.

I have been making trips for the past 16 years, but this last one was our worst ever.  Friend and I were up Thursday to Saturday. We started about 6 miles out on Thursday in 30fow. graphed very few fish, and the ones we did would not bite, we did manage to get one eye 26 1/2 inches and one keeper. So Friday we moved out past 7 miles on the outskirts of most others.  Luck did not change, stay pretty much the same as Thursday, did get one 20 inch eye. There were alot of houses but could not tell if anyone was catching anything. watch a couple of trucks try to cross over a pressure ridge. first one got hung up. the second one took a running start, look like both the truck and house caught air. turned out to be the funniest part of trip. anyone fair any better this past few days?

I bought a cabin on hand lake this year, and was woundering if there are any ice fishing reports for the area? I noticed that there are not any reports for this area for a long time, maybe thats a good sign, as its all secret. I was located in palisade, and just moved here this year, looking for general info, nothing specific.
I can say the ice seems good, if you stay away from the slush.

Curious to hear what others are using or have had success when carrying their ice auger on a snowmobile. Currently my wheeler is in for a rebuild so time to set up the snowgo. As of now my best thought is a digger mounted on the front bumper to give  the auger a smoother ride.

Leech Lake.  I am wondering what to expect.  I think I might go out on Boy bay using the public landing on Sugar Point.  First are there any safety concerns, ice conditions to worry about, Landing safe?  Second what can I expect for fish? Kind of looking for some nice panfish during the day and a stray walleye or two towards evening

On the south end...  A great week of walleye and sauger action on Lake of the Woods.  Most ice fishing is taking place between 23 - 28'.  Jigging one line and using a bobber with a live minnow on the other is the go to strategy.  Popular colors this week... gold, glow, glow red, pink and orange.  A lot of small fish to sort through to find keepers.  Some big walleyes from 28 - 32 inches caught this week.  A mix of walleyes and saugers with jumbo perch, big pike, tullibees and eelpout being caught as a rule.

Icedog, your on the right path if your looking for lightweight fast moving portables! I had my pack-a-shack for 8ish years and had no issues with at all. I use mine for running and gunning river eyes. They do get very tight if you need a heater and I’d recommend using as short of a rod as possible. They are perfect for if you just want to sight fish on a warm day. Good luck searching!

I don't need a huge one but bigger than a one man. Used my brother's one man once, just not enough room for me and fishing deep with 2 holes is looking for a diseaster waiting to happen.   And I'd really like a zipper door so I don't have to always flip it to get out.
    • Wanderer
How big of one do you want @smurfy?   I switched from my old Fish Trap uninsulated Voyager to a used Otter 650 last year - insulated roof only.  Smaller and a little tattered but had some adds for $450.  That’s about as low as you’ll see them.  Most of the houses I’ve seen his size run $950 - $1100 used in like new condition, assembled.   The thing with the insulated Otters is they get big and heavy fast cuz they’re built so well.  The 650 is an oversized 1 person/small 2 person that I can manage better but you can’t pack the kitchen sink in it.
    • smurfy
Just curious Jim, how much ching you have to put out for that. I am throwing around the idea of replacing my old uninsulated Dave gentz fish trap. Looking to go insulated and a zipper door.   Really struggling with this as I only use it 3-5 times a winter. My main means of winter fishing includes a spear.

Picked up a new/used Otter the other day, I like it. Very little condensation, ran my heater on low, was plenty comfortable. Wish the trout would have cooperated, maybe next time. LOL  Looks great hooked to my new Skandic. Great snowmachine, was hard makin the decision to drop the coin, but I'm glad I did. Now all I have to do is find the fish. LOL Jim

I agree with a post above that breathable boots (or raincoats, or anything in that material) does not stay water proof. Material like Goretex is a hydrophobic polymer that is porous.  I had an intern job where we manufactured this type of material.  Liquid water will not run through it due to surface tension, but vapor water does, so at first it works great.  However, once you get anything into the pores it creates channels that water can flood through.  So if you keep it super clean by not walking in mud, it works.  But of course with boots for hunting that's not going to fly.   I have really bad luck with breathable boots and I keep looking for ones that have a higher full rubber boot before the breathable material starts and I have not found on that looks good.  So when its really wet i stick with full rubber, which of course means sweaty feet.   I saw a post saying use spray maybe that is the answer?  Is that for breathable material?  I still wonder though if spray is just blocking the breathability as well as keeping water out.
    • Dan85
We should get coyote hunting back to the top of the list. Many people out there chasing these wiley critters over the winter months? Ive been out twice so far this season with a swing and oops stood up to leave at the wrong time to show for it.
    • Dan85
I will do some looking. I had one a while back, but may have already gotten rid of it before we moved a few years back. I'll have to go through the pile of untouched items in the shed.
