Went out on Blue lake .... The sunnies were biting every where.   Most where on the smaller size but was still fun.   Moved to deeper water .... SUNNIES ... they where all over it seemed.  Just know size.  Maybe a few border liners.  But for a quick 1-2 hours at midday, hey it was fun.    Tried a small lake close bye and it was very slow 1 hour before dark to dark.  weird.  see ya all out on the water ... gotta go get on the 4 wheeler and get out there :)

Cret we need to go fish soon

Please try to toss those gills 8 inches or bigger back. If you get that trophy fish put it on the wall. 7-8 inch gills are sure good to eat. This will help or lakes by putting those big gills back and remember eating a 10 inch gill is like eating a 30 inch walleye. Crappies over 12 are fun to catch but but keep the ones under that size.

okay okay enough with the preaching hot bites below:

Green Lake has a good crappie bite going out in the basin. Move until you mark them.

Lori lake has been giving up some water gills and crappies.

Little Elk has some gills and crappies lots of sorting but action.
Elk Lake has been giving up some nicer crappies from the Briggs chain.
Lske FRANCIS still has some nice fish but you need to cover ground to get them.

Personally I prefer to eat 8-8.75 inch gills.

You fish lakes that have bigger fish and less pressure than around me. You don’t find many gills over 8 inches here

Went fishing with a friend and we hit up a lake that is known to have some big fish. The first few hours I got it handed to me. I caught a few perch and no gills. We moved all over the lake and spilt up to cover more ice faster. I remembered fishing the lake with my grandpa and we fished near a shore line by two big pine trees. I think my grandpa was guiding me as that is where we found fish. It was not lights out but they were nice gills.

I kept 8 gills for a old guy I normally see fishing but I have not seen him all winter. I  called his son-in-law and he picked up the fillets and delivered them for me. “Remember to take care of those old guys as one day you will be the old guy!” Grandpa Rudy told me!!

Went out yesterday on Baxter ... no one out there ... landing in good shape ... drilled a bunch of holes where i've done good in the past ... NOTHING ... did not mark one fish.   Got on the wheeler and headed out to Blue.   North landing in rough shape now.  was able to go around on the wheeler and get out to 12 feet ... and Sunny after sunny.  Went to 15-16 feet;  Boom daddy!   Crappies!!   caught a few on different plastics but they wanted the green moon jig with smaller minnow dead sticken!   was not planning on keeping fish but would have caught my limit and every one was a keeper with the biggest 12.25"   average was around 9.5 -10".    Going to give it a shot this morning for a few hours and that will be it as that North landing don't have much left for a wheeler and would not try a truck!!

Went out to break in the shotgun and boy I was shooting way off mark at them crows. Finn sat there watching and shaking his head as I unloaded multiple times. It was fun to shoulder the shotgun again. Might try again tomorrow

Huh, crows.  Interesting.  Never thought about them as a spring shoot type bird.

In prime breeding colors I bet! ?

I watched a dad gum black squirrel take a hideout in one of my new wood duck boxes tonight.  I think I’ll have words with him tomorrow.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
