Up here in the Northwest Angle lines are tight and fish are biting! Water temps are warmer in the shallows at 50-52 degrees to upper 40’s in the main lake.
Recent weather was not great but the fishing was. Some of the best action has been within a few miles of the lodge. Walleyes have been found anywhere from 3 to 30ft. 22-30ft with a jig and minnow is best during daylight hours.
Multiple trophy walleye were caught this week including a couple 28’s and one 31 inch. The bite off of the dock late evening is really heating up and will produce limits.
Come up soon to take advantage of great spring fishing!

We're still OPEN & fishing up at the NW Angle!
Fishing on the Minnesota side continues to be best early morning and from sundown to dusk. Work deeper edges of the break line in the morning and afternoon, moving up to the flats and points for an evening flurry. With low pressure coming for the weekend expect fishing to be excellent.
On the Ontario side, Crappie action was really good this past weekend in 30+ feet of water. Lots of fish over 14."
Lake conditions have drastically improved as water making slush has receded below the ice or has frozen over in most areas. Caution should be used in areas of high current or between islands.
Hard water fishing ends April 15th!

Hello from the NW Angle!
Areas of slush on trails in Minnesota are refreezing overnight and are still in good condition if well-traveled. Walleye action is getting better every day, with mornings and late evening being best. Rippin’ raps and buckshots are enticing violent strikes; 18-22 ft of water is key. Big northern pike are hitting jiggin’ spoons and tip ups with large baits.
Anglers venturing into Canada continue to find schooled Crappies and big walleye deeper into 30+ feet. A slow presentation is most effective for catching crappies.
Until next week,

We are looking to add a sales person to our Vadnais Heights, MN office. If you are unfamiliar with our company, we publish regional fishing and outdoor maps/information for the Midwest and East Coast. We’re well established and currently doing business at most your mom and pop shops as well as almost all the major outdoor outlets and big box stores.
We’re in the process of expanding into new markets and are in need of some sales support. This is a great opportunity for someone with no prior sales experience that wants to get their foot in the door and work for a growing company in the Outdoor field. Must be a self starter with excellent communication and interpersonal skills – AND must enjoy talking hunting and fishing of course….

Hello from the NW Angle!
Minnesota snowmobile trail conditions are in good shape. The Baudette trail is great north of Knight Island. Walleye action heats up in periods of stable weather. The best catching is happening in 21-25ft, with the most productive method being a dead-stick beside an actively jigged rattle bait such as a buckshot or rippin’ rap. Glow white/pink is out producing other colors. The late ice bite can be phenomenal on Lake of the Woods, ice permitting we will have houses out through the end of the month!
Canadian fishing is recommended via snowmobile as they are light enough not to drop into the slush as easy as other track vehicles. Crappies are still filling buckets and walleye are actively feeding on reef break lines and points. Walleye season is open through April 14th.

This is a pretty cool video - I have to admire Jay's wife to go along on the fishing trip despite being sick and being rewarded by catching a trophy walleye. Also, I've never been in a SnoBear but they look impressive - if we get any more snow here I might need one just to get to work!!

Hello from the NW Angle!
Fishing is really starting to pick up, which usually means Spring is on the way!
Fishing on the Minnesota side has been best at first and last light, which can make for long days on the ice this time of year. The Sauger bite has really picked up with a lot good sized eaters coming out of 21-25 ft. The most effective colors for both Walleye and Sauger have been Chartreuse, White, any Glow/lighted/UV (specifically red) and hammered gold. When fishing at depths less than 20 feet, keep an active presentation. Northerns tend to be most active in the early afternoon which is a good time to take a break from jigging and put out a tip-up.
Fishing on the Canadian side has been good since the last snow storm and continues to produce Crappie and Walleye. A light setup for crappies with plastics or larvae has been productive.
Slush is still frozen in well-traveled areas but it plentiful off trail.
Fishing will continue to improve as the weather does, there is still a lot of time to fit in a last minute ice fishing trip!!

South End
Great reports continue to come in for walleyes and saugers. Fish being caught in a variety of depths from 24-34' of water. Morning/evening bite in 15-20'. Some suspended fish. Keep jigging lines moving. Gold, glow red and other glow colors effective. Try rattles to draw fish in. Deadstick with a plain hook and live minnow. Fish houses on ice through March 31, walleyes open through April 14, pike season open continuous. Thick ice, extensions needed. Resort houses available with good ice. Ice roads open.
Rainy River
A strong current in the river this year and a lot of snow. Snowmobile trail on a river is open and marked from Baudette (downstream from the bridge) to the lake. Stay on the trail for safety.
NW Angle
Excellent reports across the Angle. Walleyes coming from 22-30'. Saugers and jumbo perch mixed in. Jig one line, second line dead stick with a plain hook with a live minnow. Snowmobile trails from south shore across the lake to Angle are marked with fresh snow. Lots of slush off of the trail.

It can be a surprisingly touchy situation. Plow or no plow. I’ve been on both sides and have heard many stories like @HunterFisher11 stated. Like Jerkinlips, I used to only travel by snowmobile and drag a portable around; back when fishing trips were always with “the guys”. The plow berms were hazards; you can’t see a lot of them until you’re on em. And I never understood why guys up north plowed 1/4 acre lots around their houses when they set them down. I did always appreciate the guys who marked their berms with pine boughs so they could be seen but it also looked like they were staking claim to a pretty large space on the ice. Fast forward to buying a wheel house so my wife would go ice fishing and we could maybe have some family with the grandkids out. Plowing almost becomes necessary. And it isn’t easy or cheap. Plus I figured out the extra plowing around the house is to fight slush from forming. There becomes a game you have to play to keep everyone who drives off that access from coming to your fish house door. And they will. And even if you plow past your house, you just put in a new road and suddenly have traffic and create problems if it just dead ends. It’s best to make a loop so people can turn around to get out. Suddenly you feel responsible like a resort operator for all the people who just wanna fish “somewhere”. I try plow the minimum needed and don’t drop my blade until I get a ways off the access hoping the two rut road will deter most from following. When I do put the blade down I don’t scrape the ice either and keep a single-wide width. That helps lessen the berm. Usually that’s enough to stay semi private. Don’t forget the loop though. Don’t plow right to your final spot. Drill out the area enough to fine tune the location of the house, Then plow your house spot out. Put it down. Then consider if you need to block the spur you’re fishing on. Either with the truck or a snow pile. It’s more work than dragging a portable out by snowmobile, that I’m sure of. Is there a wrong or right way to plow? I think it’s only there are safe and unsafe ways to plow. And there’s just differences in how people use the lakes these days. Help a brother out on the ice. Sooner or later you’ll need it if you spend enough time ice fishing. -

Were you somewhere relatively local? Been thinking about going out, but didn't know what to think of area ice yet. -

So as of Friday afternoon, talked to my brother-in-law and he said that there was 7-8 inches of really good ice with hardly any snow, would think it has gotten a bit thicker now with how cold it has been.. -

I live down in Mankato and was planning to go check out some lakes in the next few days. I'll let everyone know what I find out -

Was out Friday. Didn't find any thin spots but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be cautious yourself if you decide to go out. Got about 5-6 inches where I was. -

That house has sat in that same exact spot for 85-95% of the season for at least the last 2-3, maybe even 4 years. Not worth it 😒 so far this season, I'm guessing. -

Just couldn't get anything to bite with multiple baits; shiners, rainbows, minnow heads, plastics. Luckily I was comfy in the insulated pop up. Any advice on a coldfront bite? Was in a shallow bay then moved into 20'. Just one tiny bluegill on my panfish rod. Did not get skunked, I make it my mission to at least get one of anything. -

It may be unkind but I don't know how putting the snow back that you removed would be unlawful. Don't shoot the messenger; I am just passing along what I have heard. I travel by snowmobile so I couldn't care less about plowed roads. To me they are just a hazard for sledding. That being said, the people that used the plowed road today were very considerate. They pulled well off of the road and kept a fair distance from others. I took a sled ride from McKinley Park to Fortune Bay and encountered at least 6 patches of slush. I saw a couple of spots were 4 wheelers drove through slush; looks like they had a hard time. I saw several 4 wheelers getting stuck in the deep snow today. They would back up and take another run to keep going. Traveling is very difficult for most wheelers. I did see one Jeep on the lake just outside of McKinley Park bay. Good luck fishing and traveling on Lake Vermilion. -

was planning on heading up to the cabin this weekend to do some snowmobiling, but since I had to ride across my lake I decided to wait. they had some good ice early, but then the warm weather, then 18 inches of snow, I would guess the lake is a mess. last report I had from a week ago, was no snowmobile or wheelers have been out on the ice.
