Fished Arians road at 32ft&34ft friday. My son&I caught 4 fish.Went to Zipple bay on saturday & caught 16 fish in 28ft.It was 36 degrees below zero.Slowest fishing in over 20 trips.Lots of snow, really hard to get around other than the edges of plowed roads.I really think the heavy snow cover is making it difficult for the fish to see.Which translates into poor fishing.Anyone else agree? Good Fishing DrJ.

Somedays a guy should just stay in bed. After fighting with every piece of equipment I own, and half freezing to death... I caught 2 walleyes and a perch today. Whenever the wind comes up strong from the East, I never get the fish to cooperate much.
I had fish on the Vex all morning and couldn't get them no matter what I tried.
I suppose someone got them somewhere today, but for me it was too darn miserable to move around today. I had the sunflower heater going full blast and my rods, reels, holes, everything was freezing up. We gave up around 12:30.

my two brothers and dad were on sixteen mile saturday. They hit the perch pretty well but the walleyes and saugers were closed. then they pulled our house back to Arneson's. Also, saturday i had a few friends on Arnesons and they came back with not much luck at all. If they hadn't brought there 3 month old lab and a three year old along they said they would have been board.

We fished out of Arnesons last Friday. We had 2 fish between 8:30 and 11. They were going to move us when the bite hit and we had about 10 by lunch.
The guide said that everyone wants to go out to 16 mile because they think that is where the bite is. But those closer in were doing much better recently than those on 16. But yet there were some that were doing OK close in that just thought the "grass was greener" out there.

Went out of Schusters on 23rd and 24th. 5 guys kept 10 walleye/sauger and 1 jumbo perch in 2 days! Very slow. That was the worst fishing I have ever had on LOW. The bad thing was it was 3 of the guys first trip up there and they had high expectations and were very disappointed. I had really been looking forward to the trip and we still had fun, but it was just really slow.

Fished out the Wigwams houses on Sat and Sun. 8 of us kept 84 fish on Sat and 14 more on Sun. Released many small ones. I thought the fishing was great. We were in 32 ft of water. Other guys did not do near as well an they were only one or two houses away.

We fished Zipple Bay Friday and Saturday. Fished in about 30 feet of water. Friday we caught a lot of fish, and the action was steady all day long.
Saturday was really, really slow. We managed a few fish but we really worked for them. Biggest walleye of the weekend was a 13.5 incher, so size was severely lacking.
Despite the slow fishing, it's hard to beat a trip to LOTW

six of us on our annual zipple bay trip. thursday in 28 fow enough action to keep us going. kept enough for a good fish fry. friday same area, was very slow but what hit was larger fish. saturday moved to 25 fow straight north of the beacon. the party started at 10 o'clock. the fish didn't stop untill dark. got our limits to go home with. largest was a 23" walleye. 3 17" walleyes, and 2 16" sauger. best day we ever had on low. most hit an glow jig a bits and gold jigs.

Howdy to all. Fished out of portables on Fri and Sat. Friday was very slow but 4 of us did keep about 20 fish for the day. The kicker was a 13lb pout that spooled my buddy twice. We were in 32 ft of water. The big ticket was a gold buckshot rattle spoon. They did not want Angleye's at all!!! On saturday the other 2 guys stayed in 32 ft of water and caught 10 keeper eye/sauger while we moved to the end of Adrians Road. We were in about 35/36 ft of water. Big ticket that day was a white jig that glowed blue under a bobber. Missed 27 fish on it but caught 14 on it also. They were not intrested in the spoons much but did hit the buckshot again that day. ended with 22 eyes/sauger and 4 really nice perch. Lots of fish marked but not agressive. I could get them to follow a jig up sometimes 8 foot but no bite. Found you needed to be really agressive with the jig and then they would probally hit the deadstick.

There were 3 of us out at Gibbons staying in a sleeper, caught maybe 30 walleyes and saugers, but maybe only 10 above 12 inches, largest was 16 inches. Highlight of the weekend was catching a huge eelpout (was nice to finally catch something that put up a good fight) Like the place that we stayed out at and I liked the fact he kept checking on us. (was good especially since the car wouldn;t start on saturday and needed jumped)
Made me feel better to know that we weren;t the only ones who struggled

------------------
To be the man you have to beat the man....Wooooooooo

Well I guess after hearing these reports I dont feel to bad how i did this weekend
my buddy and i fished 16 mile and caught 60 walleyes. they were really quite active for us. our key was to keep changing lures over and over. we also moved 3 times. deeper was not better in our case
i have to say that i am really getting sick of the size. we didnt even get one that was 14 inches
7 trips to LOW this year and one fish that went 5 lbs
i dont think i have got one that has even went 18 inches since than
what is wrong up there anyways

Myself and 3 other guys took our kids up (6 boys, 10 people total) and we went out with Walleye Retreat. We had a blast. We were in 31 ft. of water split into two different day houses. Combined for the 2 days of fishing, we caught over 150 fish. The biggest only being a 17" sauger, but we had a lot of 16 inchers. I think we ended up keeping about 50-55 fish. A few nice jumbo perch too.
Fishing was pretty steady all day long both days. The setup that seemed to work the best was just a plain colored hook with a fathead on it and a ice buster bobber. The fish were biting light, and switching to bobbers, we could let them take their time on it. Caught 2 big eelpout, 8 1/2 and 5 1/2 pounds. When we were talking between houses on the radio, we didn't mention species, so on the bombardier ride in, some other guys made the comment that they heard someone had caught some big walleyes. We had a good laugh about that.
All in all, despite the fact I hit 2 deer on the way up, just north of Deer River, we had a great time.
Was up and fished Friday and Sat. and had OK luck. I've had better but I've also had worse. The morning bite was slow for us but picked up in the afternoon. Kept some marginal fish for the 2 fish frys we had but mostly decent eaters. Ended up cleaning about 40 each day between 4 of us with a few jumbos thrown in. Fished 32' and glow clown color worked best.
We also were out of Gibbins 24th-26th. We managed about 50 eyes/saugers. With the biggest being 18" with a couple 16" mixed in. We had plenty of action thanks to the Tulibee. Did manage a 8lb pout...It was delicous!!! We enjoyed it none the less. I would recommend Gibbins to anybody.

Three of us were in one of Ballard's sleepers from 1/24-1/26/04 and did ok. THe whole time caught around 100 fish, but a lot of dinks. We ended up with about 30 in the bucket along with 2 very nice jumbos. Snagged 2 pout just after sundown and one on the rattle reel at 6:05am. I thought maybe a lost walleye was biting on the jig on the rattle, but then got it up in the dark to see a fat pout floppin on the floor. Needless to say I went back to bed for an hour and then the sauger came through. Our biggest fish was a 17" sauger all weekend. Overall a lot of small ones, but decent action throughout the weekend. The drive back to the cities on Mondy was not a fun one by any means. Can't wait to get back up there again.
Good Luck!

Hey now, that one is all you! Haha! Don’t make another thread septic. 😉 Yup, the Looper Bug. I couldn’t remember that catchy name for it. 2lb test is a little crazy, especially for the line quality back then but I can see that being a thing too. Such clear water. Looking down the hole watching the fish swim around and them looking back at you. The further out I got, the easier it was for them to see me. My one looper charged in when my jig was just below the ice while I was laying face down like you said. It hit basically right in front of my face. The fight was me rolling over and pulling it out of the hole. That was shortly before the guys in the shallows packed up their little black shelters and left with their fish. So, by the end of the day I learned: black looper bug; light line; conceal movement; and/or fish shallow. And then never went back.

Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time. Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

🤔why didnt ya "leech" some of them black flies from the guy!!!!!🤗😂 awe come on....wanderer would of said it too!!!!😉

Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug. I remember the first time I was introduced to it. There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This one guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot. When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging. I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies. I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs. By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over! Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️ I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home. When I had more of the wander spirit. Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Marais. Then driving all the way home the same day. 🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!

I did the looper steelhead thing in front of the French River once. It was fun. I got one looper but the sight fishing aspect of it was the most fun. We saw a couple guys limit on steelhead up close to shore and learned the black fly was the way to catch ‘em. We didn’t have any. My first 40+ hour day that I can remember. Went to work Friday morning, Van Halen concert Friday night, too jacked up on the way home to call it a day so we loaded up for the North Shore. Fished all day, drove home Saturday night. Those crazy kids… Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands have always been a want but an undone deed. The wander spirit has faded from my old traveling buds. They like to stick to what they know now.
