Trolling Motor Upgrade 50 lb to 70 lb

AaronTC05

Question

I'm looking to upgrade my early 2000's Minnkota Powerdrive 50 lb trolling motor and I'm finding that based on my boat length and weight a Power Drive v2 70 lb seems to be the best bet according to what I've read.  My question is will I notice a noticeable amount of added thrust between an older 50 lb motor and a newer 70 lb motor?

Right now with my old 50 lb motor I have a hard time getting to 2.0 mph on a calm day with just me and a small amount of gear in the boat (Lund Explorer SS 1650, 75 hp Mercury 2 stroke) and I'd like to be able to easily get up closer to 3 mph as a lot of the tactics for walleyes these days talk about trolling cranks up in that speed over weeds.  Also I'd like better control on windy days then I get now.  Do you think a new Power Drive v2 70 lb would get me up in that speed range with my setup?  Would a 80 lb Terrova be a big jump over a 70lb Power Drive v2? I don't see a big difference between Terrova and Power Drive V2 other than the 112 lb option...

I have a 80 pound terrova on an older 1775 pro-v with 140 suzuki and in might get to 2.5.  Above that I can troll with the big motor (or a kicker)

As Del said you'll see a little improvement and your run time longer.    At 3 mph your going to go through the batteries reserve fast.  A kicker to get you up to speed and your bow mount on auto pilot to keep you on coarse IMO is the way to go and on windy days the only way to go.

I don't think you will get 3mph.  I checked mine last night and 2.5-2.6 was it at "10".

(Slightly bigger rig )

Yeah I'd say getting to the low 2s consistently and at least having control in the breeze a realistic goal.  I was out Friday and could just barely get it to 2 going down wind (a light breeze), but mostly in the 1.6-1.8 range max.  I think my brother has a 112 lb unit on his 17' crestliner and can get it up to near 3, but I'm not sure I want the added batteries and cost in my slightly smaller boat.

A 70 or 80 pound 24 volt unit should get your boat to 2.5 not wind aided.

I have an 1850 Lund Impact with a 150 hp Honda 4 stroke on it. An 80# thrust Terrova, 24 volt will easily get me to 3 mph at a setting of 5. Batteries will last all morning at that setting.

If you want more speed and more control go with the 80# thrust motor. The Terrova also has a lot of great features that you will like and use.

Not sure why you can't get 3 mph out of your main? I troll deep diving raps all the time at 2.88 to 3mph on my main 75 hp 2 stroke Merc on a 17.5 Starcraft.

Do you tilt your main motor to reduce drag ?

I have done that at times. It depends on how much wind I am bucking and if I need more or less speed. Always make sure you have a good water stream coming out of the motor to keep it cooling.

Wow, Cliff.  Maybe my 6 year old batteries really are getting feeble.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
