July Fishing Report

Recommended Posts

This week's Leech Lake Fishing Report

The week for the most part has been the typical July grind.  Some days finding Leech Lake's walleye bounty and others picking them off one at a time and having to fish alot of spots. Being versatile and still have lots of presentations ready from spinners, crankbaits, lindy rigs, slip bobbers, jigs, etc. all ready to go to find out what is going to work for the day.  The crazy weather pattern has definitely created an up and down bite as well.

Main Lake

For the most part the main lake has been overall slow. With water temps in the low 70s the trolling bite should steadily get better on the reefs and steep breaklines either long lining shad raps, flicker shads or using leadcore to fish for suspended fish or fish on the reefs.  Going 1.8-2.3mph is usually the target range.  Some fish are still being caught using lindy rigs on the reefs or off on the edges, but the slow methodical way of fishing has been tough.

West Side of the Lake

Walker Bay has had a decent bite in 15-25ft of water along the shoreline breaks and on some of the humps.  Lindy rigs with leeches or crawlers has been best.  Some of the cabbage in Steamboat, Agency, and Kabekona has also produced some fish with slip bobbers during those early and late feeding periods.  There have been mixed reports around Goose Island with some days the points such as Pine, Duck, and Ottertail producing fish if the wind has been blowing in to them.

The musky bite is starting to get better and anglers reporting some fish being caught and moved.  Cabbage beds have still been the best with bucktails or glide baits.

Panfish bite has been good in 6-15ft of water on the weed edges or find clumps of good cabbage.  A small panfish jig with a small leech or chunk of crawler is the ticket.

Until next week!

Leech Lake was overall a slower bite this past week.  Fish were still caught but the feeding windows were short at times and you needed to be ready to go and have the right presentation when they were active.

The early morning and late evening bites have proved to be the best to have the most consistent action as well as putting some keepers in the livewell.  A windy and cloudy day will also.  Fishing shallow can pay off dividends, whether it is fishing weeds, depressions withing flats, or windblown points or shorelines.  A jig with a minnow, leech, or crawler or a slip bobber are great ways to fish for these walleyes.  Another good presentation is trolling crankbaits such as a #5 Shad Rap or Flicker Shad by either long lining them or putting them out on planer boards.

During the mid day hours, trolling crankbaits and spinners is a great way to locate active fish.  Long breaklines in 12-16ft of water or deeper in 18-28ft of water seems to be the best zone for walleyes.  Working deep rock or sand humps with lindy rigs and crawlers, leeches, or chubs has also produce on the south end of the Main Lake or in Walker and Agency Bays.

The multi species bite has also been good on local lakes in the area targeting weedlines in 12-18ft of water.  Slip bobbers, casting plastics, lindy rigging are all great ways to work these lakes over and catch everything from pike, smallmouth, largemouth, panfish, and even walleyes.  Give it a shot.

Until next week!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
