Any west end musky reports all since opener? Heading up for the weekend and will fish mostly for muskies, smallies, and may try for some walleyes in the evenings. Can't wait to be back up at the lake!

Wakemup,

Only report I have heard is that they were following but no hook ups yesterday.

Pretty much a crawler and leech bite now on both ends of the lake.

Rough weekend at the lake... but still better than any day at work!

I managed to get out for a few hours Saturday morning and then got off the lake when the storms rolled in and stayed off. I threw for muskies for a few hours but didn't move any and then switched to smallies and boated a few on rock piles.

We were stuck for a while on Saturday with the road near Camp Vermilion washed out. Looks like the whole area got quite a bit of water. How'd everyone else fare?

The fishing was pretty decent over the weekend.  Walleyes were biting on rigs with leeches or crawlers. Caught 12 between Friday and Saturday with with 4 nice slotters.   Biggest being a 24".

Buckle Up.  Already seeing mayflies in some of the walleyes stomachs.   My shoreline was covered in them on Sunday morning.

Gotta get the lift in, then the boat.   See you around the far west...

Wakemup,

I have heard that there is a good bobber bite on the reefs in Frazer Bay from my fellow guides that fish that end of the lake.

Thanks Cliff! I think I am going to make a run Friday morning for Frazer if the weather cooperates.

Any idea on a rough depth range I should be looking at? I've never fished Frazer but will park over the top of a few reefs and give it a go.'

Tight lines!

No Idea what depth they are fishing but the bite on Big Bay still mostly in the 16' to 26' depths for me.

Thanks Cliff! I’m planning on picking up some leeches on my way it. Has the bite gravitated toward crawlers at all too?

Crawlers and leeches mostly. I had a few days yet that chubs were also working on Lindys.

As I went by the mouth of  partridge river/black bay by metsa point... stone wall last evening there were like four boat fishing what is normally a spring spot.

Do  they know something I don't know?  Or do I know something  they don't know?

I'll let you know tomorrow night if the weather holds out?  We had a decent spring bite there.  One evening I just caught a nice walleye and out of no where, 4 young adults appear from the other side of the cabin and start casting bobbers all around us. I was on spotlock and ended up moving. We caught 3 in the hour or so we were there and didn't catch another after the move.

so what was with the four boats fishing the mouth of the partridge river by metsa point, stone wall, like tuesday or wed?   That is totally a spring spot but now?  Cigar guy, you see that?

Also saw two boats fishing the weeds where it narrow down to go to black bay...   Once(lo many moons ago) I got into t he crappies in that spot in the summer not spring.  anyone know?

It is always interesting to see what folks are doing and wonder why

I'm heading out that way now. Didn't make it out last night. Neighbor's stopped by and we ended up grilling out.

Only caught one 19" and it was trolling thru that area. Two boats were bobber fishing, saw them net one, but couldn't tell what it was. We worked a few spots, marked a fair amount, but they were tight lipped. Also caught several nice sunnies.

I made a run to Frazer yesterday at 5am, by the time I got there from Wakemup Narrows the wind picked up. I fished for an hour and then decided to head back before the wind started to blow even worse. It was a harrowing ride from Oak Narrows back to Muskego Point in the 14 foot fishing boat I've got and puttered into 2+ ft waves. I think I am going to hold off making that trip until I've got a bigger boat ?

This morning I sat on a hump in Norwegian, another boat that was in the area but across the bay about 300 yards trolled over and fished around me so I pulled up and went to windsock instead. They had a marker out on the spot that I didn't even see until they came over and looked annoyed...

I fished around some other Islands in Norwegian but no walleyes to report, plenty of perch, smallies, and largies as well.

Anyone having luck with walleyes? I have been trying lindys and jigs with leeches but may need to switch it up.

DNR guyus showed up to seine our beach today.   They do if for four weeks of july every year since 1984.

Today they got several hundred perch of assorted sizes and a couple little misc. things.

Said there were several good to great year classes coming up on West end.   Niles point and Norwegian bay were mentioned....

Nice fish Cigarguy, I didn't have the same luck. I found it to be a real tough bite the past few days. Even the pike were giving lazy follows on a few spots. I switched to slower moving presentations like jerk baits with long pauses and they still wouldn't eat all that much.

Managed to catch quite a few largies in slop bays on senkos and spinner baits.

Not sure when I'll get back out again, I seem to have a problem with my engine. It was bogging down on my yesterday and I limped back to the dock from across the bay. Time for a carb clean and new plugs I think :)

Holy Cow, we just had a whole bunch of rain in not very long.   One weather station from just down the road says 2.5 inches in under two hours.   Two dumps of an inch plus in like 20 minutes each.  Water standing all over the yard.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
