I am very excited to be speaking to the folks of Rochester, MN for the first time ever.  It is lone overdue.  Walleye University has been around since 2000 and finally made it here.  Because of advertising rules I am not allowed to share the discounts attendees will receive.  I will say this, the class will more than pay for itself with the $20 gift card and the deals from Berkley.  I hope to see you there.

Walleye University in Rochester, MN.

 

Rochester, MN – This marks the 16th year for professional angler Johnnie Candle’s Walleye University series and the first time it will be presented in Rochester.  “Walleye may not be the first word that you think of when you think of Rochester, but maybe it should be?” asks Candle.  “Within a short drive of this city, there are hundreds if not thousands of walleye fishing opportunities.  Surrounded by some of the best walleye fishing in the country and home to one of the best walleye fishing clubs in the country (Walleye Searchers) I am sure this will be a well-attended event.  I can’t wait”

 

This event covers as much walleye as you can in a day.  The day will start with sessions on the mainstays of walleye fishing; jigging, rigging, spinners, and crank baits.  “I call these the four cornerstones of walleye fishing.  They cover the basics.  Once you understand these foundations, you will become a very consistent angler.”

 

After lunch will be a presentation on marine electronics. “There have been many new advancements to marine electronics in the past few years.  What was good 10 years ago is hard to even find in boats anymore.  We will discuss why the new technology is so good and I will discuss interpretation until everyone is comfortable with what they are seeing under the water.”

 

A big part of Walleye University is a question and answer session that will not end until all questions are answered. “I want to make a concerted effort to get everyone’s questions answered.  I have no idea what situations the anglers in attendance are facing so why try to guess?  This way, everyone gets what they want out of the school.  Each question seems to lead to another and before you know it we are out of time.” 

 

The event will end with a very quick look at some of the hottest new gear available to the walleye angler.  There will also be a drawing for door prizes and each person in attendance will receive a $20 gift card from SCHEELS.

 

Walleye University in Rochester, MN will be held on Saturday, March 26th, 2016 from 9:30am until 4:30pm at SCHEELS; 1220 12th Street SW, Apache Mall.  To register for the class call SCHEELS at 507.281.2444 or visit in-store.  The cost of the school is $50.

      Fished Lake of the Woods yesterday during this tropical heat wave.. I'll tell you what, if you're planning on fishing in these temps, bring backup gear for your essentials (Heat, Auger, etc).       Just wondering when jigging for eyes in the winter, why is the standard to tip a jig with a minnow head and not the whole minnow or the minnow tail?  Would seem like a more natural presentation to tip with the tail and not the head.  Anyone experimented with this?

      Can't seem to ever get a sled ride together anymore on the other side of the wall.
      Any guys with a sled and porty want to get together for a meetup and fish somewhere some weekend for the day or weekend if way up north?
      Crappies-Walleyes both? 
      Mill Lacs, Brainerd area................?   The more the merrier, safety in numbers helps if someone needs a pull or getting out of slush.
      Not a big plan. Meet at a lake. Stare at the lake map, mark a spot or spots on the gps and head out.
      Not really worried about a cookout, but we could just cuts into fishing time.  Bring our own lunch, bait and pop or? 
      Don't want to count out wheelers with portys but hope you can hang if its deep or slushy. 😕
       
      Oh forget the Public service announcement: Portys must be fished at least 6' feet apart or more!. Wearing a mask is a good idea on a cold sled ride. No talking about Trump, Biden or God will also keep us safe from each other! 😆
       
      So again, no big complicated plan. Meet up, check map, go fishing! 👍

      Leech Lake.  I am wondering what to expect.  I think I might go out on Boy bay using the public landing on Sugar Point.  First are there any safety concerns, ice conditions to worry about, Landing safe?  Second what can I expect for fish? Kind of looking for some nice panfish during the day and a stray walleye or two towards evening

      Alright, looking for insight from some people who know more about sitting and waiting for fish than I do.  Last year I bough some tip ups and had some luck on them but now I see it appears to be all the rage to use the IFish Pro stuff and use a rod and reel.  Anybody out there feel like these actually do any better than a standard old tip up or is it just about not having a mess of line on the ice after having a flag.  Moved to MN from mostly fishing northerns on tip ups which didn't seem to care about things not spinning as smooth as these darn walleyes do around here.  Would a rod and reel system like the ifish pro or finicky fooler actually help to have less false flags? I'm at a bit of a loss here with the more picky fish.

      12/3/20 a female posted 4" ice on the Coon lake channel with photo of someone in a hub fishing. A comment stated someone also caught a 24" walleye in the channel. Over the years you may see a half dozen anglers early ice on the channel. Saturday 12/5 I stopped by the channel and counted about 54 anglers crowded in the 300' x 800' channed and 6 or so cars driving around looking for a place to park. Yesterday 60+ crowded the channel. Really hard to fix stupid. Walleye slot over 17". Won't be long before DNR Walleye reduction changes.

      momma insisted on heading out to Dino's for there sunday brunch, so of course that meant a drive past the lakes. the ice is starting to turn dark. noone at the river access and becker looked abondoned, so did horseshoe for that matter. there where a few out from the landing on eden lake, but there were 4 trucks out on cedar island..just where the lake opens up. there goofy!!!   there was 1 small vehicle out on long and a few wheelers on the south end but noone out by the island by cozy's.  browns had some wheelers out.

      i figured it be close to go time for you!!!! and with global warming you might just get to ice fish 1 month a year soon!!!!!!!🤣   me...i'm leaving wednesday morning for the northland!!!!!!🤭🤫 got 4-5 maybe 6 different lakes on my hit list!!!!!!👍 then i think i'll call it a hard water season!

      The 30.20 barometer probably didn’t help much.  But it also might be worth trying shallower?   10 feet seemed to be good in the past week on a few lakes and have read here that even shallower has been doing well for some.

      I went out of the Federal Dam landing yesterday on Gull.  It was in good shape and we had 22 inches of ice where we fished.  I thought about going out again this afternoon but wind gusts to 25 don’t thrill me on bigger lakes with no real snow cover.

      I’ve only fished Kab once but I can imagine it behaves a lot like other shield lakes.  Try to spend time near current and use large baits; either live or artificial.  I’d never go pike fishing in that area without some F18 Rapalas.  The good old Original Floater in silver/black back being a top color choice.

      well nothing is biting, I did catch 2 very small perch in 15 FOW, had all kinds of activity in deeper water, but no takers. my locator would lite up with fish, but nothing bites.

      It's just about go time smurf 😀 I didn't wish for this weather but there won't b any complaints about it for sure. Been a great ice season but honestly ready for it to be over. I  plan on picking up the boat soon getting it ready and doing a little pool 4 fishing and maybe a rainy river run yet. Probably got a couple ice outings left next week maybe some last minute runs to ottertail county. Had a epic day with some buds today locally, fish were right under the ice was a blast 👍
