Going blind

I've got a four door sedan. Could a guy get out to some deep water and off the main road a bit? Also, I've a hand auger and have misplaced my lake master device...could a guy stumble on a few? I'm a southern mn guy who needs to fish some big water. I'd actually be more into tullies and pout. Mud, rocks, sand and which resort might give me the best info for a once a year visitor???

I went out of Red Door last weekend and they gave good directions and have good roads.  You can get to some pretty isolated places from their roads once you get out a couple of miles.  Deepest we found was 37 feet off of mud flats.

If you are looking for tullibees, you might want to consider going to Gull Lake north of Brainerd.  They had the fishing tourney there last weekend and about half of the 150 fish that placed were tullibees.  The area the tourney was at is probably the best area for tullibees on the lake.  The fishing area is still plowed out so shouldn't be any problem getting out there with a car. Just go out of the 371 landing on the northeast side of Gull and the tourney was right there.

Monday looks like the best weather. I've always gone out of barnacles in the past. Red door is next to it, right? Are people fishing off the edge of flats or should I be trying to find transitions way off structure? I've never done well all day when plopped off an edge. Like I said I've got a hand auger and probably won't be able to drill more than a dozen holes every couple hours...and would rather just sit in one spot. I know that's not the best way to get on a great bite. I'm hoping for a bit of luck out there. I plan on fishing big minnows and rattle baits if that plays a role on where I should go. A big pike would be cool!

Yeah they are basically next to each other.  you can catch smaller walleyes anywhere this year but the points and edges on mud flats/ traditions that have held the best numbers for me. Tullibees and perch can be found cruising the same areas but to find numbers you have to punch holes.

I can give you more info after I fish Saturday.

I would also recommend Eddy Lyback's on the south end. 15 miles less drive. Great roads, great service, Eddy is always very helpful and attentive. In addition his road goes right to the tullibee hole, 41 ft. of water.  There are some jumbo perch and tullibee  being caught over there, as well as lots of walleyes on the rock reefs, and the occasional big pike. He has a web site.

Good luck !

Yes good thing you said something I sure forgot I have not been down there this year. Going down there would be your best bet if you want Tullibee and pike.

Dozen holes with a hand auger through 20+" of ice, every couple of hours?  Who cares if you catch fish, if you go out and do that you're my hero!  Take pictures of your holes.

On the serious side if you do head up I would agree with the above, stay on the south side, fish the reefs, you'll find a big pike and most likely some walleyes and perch.

Therat,

        How did you do fishing?

4 of us fished my favorite spot off of a mud flat for a day and a half.  There was two houses 1/4 of a mile away and then none for over a mile in any direction.  We caught 35 walleyes between 11" and 15", 5 perch between 10" and 11", 1 northern at 36", 2 eelpout at 14" and 20", and 6 tullibees from 14" to 18".  4 of the tullibees were over 17" and 18" is the largest one that I have ever caught.  I love catching tullibees and I even half thought about getting the 18"er mounted!  I like the catching, but wish we could keep a few of the walleyes....................  I talked to one of the guys in the houses a 1/4 mile away and one of them had a perch that was 14".  Pretty impressive to see a perch like that.

Sad to say I didn't go to Mille lacs.

i ended up going south and fished a bunch of lakes. It's safe to say I made the wrong decision. I do however have three days off starting tomorrow so I might head up there. Thanks to all for info and reports!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
