Another Red Lake Option

Recommended Posts

We went out with Justin Jourdain from Jourdain's Guide Service yesterday for some trout action on the reservation.  Kids under 13 free and the adults are $40 each for a half day.  You do have to stop by the Criminal justice Building in Red Lake and get a $10 reservation permit for the day.  We caught 30 trout in an hour and twenty minutes.  If you're hauling a house up for a couple of days on upper red, give it a try one morning for some fun action on a different species.  He has a facebook page under his guide service name or call his cell #218-766-7805.  You won't be disappointed!!

Hows this deal work? Park and walk out? Can you pullout a porty or sled out on to the lake with a porty? I thought that i had read some info on this and it was like $100's to fish out there for a day?  Trout stamp needed?

No trout stamp needed since the reservation is separate from the state.  We walked out because there was only 6 inches of ice.  We took our gear but he does have houses if you need one.  It was 25 degrees yesterday so we only pulled my single house out filled with gear.  I didn't even put my snosuit pants on.

P.S. Love the new Muck boots my wife gave me for Christmas.  Auger the hole and gun the auger to pull all the ice out when you pull the auger up and my feet never got wet or cold!!!

How many grams of insulation do they have?

Muck doesn't list the number of grams of insulation. They just keep you warm and you don't have to worry about it, if you get the cold weather models, (woody elites, artic pros, etc.)

On the Muck boots, I love mine also, three years in, and I do allot of walking during deer season. I believe there are at least three "levels" price and quality wise. I have the Woody Max, with removable insoles.

VMC Tungsten Chandelier Jigs in pink chartreuse glow were the top performers tipped with waxies.  1/16 oz size.  After that any small jig that was pink caught fish.

Thanks for the heads up.  After this weekend's trip around home I'll start switching rods up for the trip.  When you mean any small jig are you talking like panfish or you talking jigging spoon type lure?  I've been using VMC Tubby Jigs all winter and have been loving the results.  How big was your biggest trout?

The Tubby will work fine also.  I only had 3 Chandelier's so we had two rods rigged with horizontal jigs.  I also use 4lb fluoro on my rods.  Fluorocarbon sinks and goes well with the lighter jigs in getting them down quicker.  11 of our 25 fish limit were 18 - 21 inch fish.  He did say he has different lakes for different size fish also.  The lakes with bigger fish were not producing as many as the lake he took us to.  The other 14 were the same year class at 14 - 15 inches.  As far as catching we found that they were scattered throughout the whole water column.  We caught them off the bottom, right under the ice and everywhere in between.  I would also recommend taking a very good supply of waxies.  He told us how the group the day before us burned through all his waxies before they had their limit and things got a little tougher filling out the limit with plastic.  Are you going with Justin?  He is really good about helping to get transducers out of the hole when you have a fish on.  But since there was five of us he couldn't be at every hole every time.  So be prepared to pull your own ducer out as soon as you set the hook.  And trust me, you want that ducer out because those things go nuts when you set the hook!  You're going to have a blast!!

I can't remember the guys name but it was like Bearpaw or something like that.  It wasn't a traditional last name.  He's got a suburban he uses and that's all I know that way.  Meeting at the resort at 7:30 on Friday morning and going out from there.  Reason I'm curious about sizes is because I have an UL noodle rod I've been using and love for light bites set up with an inline reel.  All my crappie gear is set up with 4# fluorocarbon so that's good to hear!

How deep of water were you guys fishing?  Did they hit it like a freight train or light bites?

Chill62, if you are talking about Bear paw guides their names are Steve and his son Tyler. They are great guys and I will be staying in one of their shacks the week of 2/15.

Are you fishing trout with Bearpaw?  We weren't on Upper Red.  We fished a 30 acre lake on the reservation.  We met Just at the justice center in Red Lake to get our reservation permits then followed him to the lake about 5 miles east of Ponemah.

We are going trout fishing and I can't remember the guys name I'm not lining it up first hand so I don't know details like that but since it's two groups going out together his brother is going to also help for the day.  We are to meet at the casino and the guide will meet us there.  Supposedly licenses were included with our guide fees, I'm kinda along for the ride. lol  We were told they supply everything but I like my own rods so just trying to get some ideas for tackle so I can rig up rods properly ahead of time.

I'm getting excited!  Friends dad said they limited out in the first trip in an hour and a half.  They were all 1.5-2.5 pounds.  I got a noodle rod that I'm excited to try out!  Operation redo lines will have to happen one of these nights so I'm ready for Friday morning.

5 miles east of Ponemah doesn't put you where you were trout fishing...no lakes there Chris. I only know because I drive to work there everyday, and have fished trout on the reservation several times....

You are correct.  I just google earthed it and we were south of Redby.  I guess I thought it was Ponemah because I saw a sign that said Ponemah.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
