If you were going to build a cabin on a lake...any lake in Minnesota...where would you build and why? Looking more from the fishing point of view than the boating recreation. smile.gif
Let's hear it! smile.gif

For my money it would be LOW.
Not only for the world class fishing but
it would be smart money spent. LOW is the
last frontier, the property values havent
gone thru the roof yet.......yet, but they
certainly will.
But mostly I would do it for the fishing.

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Lake of the woods of course but maybe also Maple Lake. It seems to be a "well rounded" lake also.

I agree on LOW, my second choice would be Lake Vermilion. This is also any awesome spot but property values are reeeeally spendy.
I agree with Curt I subscribe to North Region Realty and there are some good buys in the LOW area. Good luck, and hang on. Bill

Hey Bill,
How would I subscribe to such a magazine? I would be interested in that.
Thanks!

I WOULD CHOOSE RAINY, HOWEVER I MIGHT BE BIAS, AS I HAVE A CABIN ON RAINY., AND IF YOU CHECK WITH THE DNR, IT HAS THE MOST FISH & BIGGEST FISH (WALLEYE) PER NET THEN ANY LAKE IN MINNESOTA!!!
SINCERELY,
FISHMIESTER

Doop: Its actually on the internet and they email me items as they become available. I had the name wrong, it is Northcountry Realty. I have the web address on my office computer. I will check it tomorrow and post if for you tomorrow evening. They cover ND,SD, Montana, Utah. Some interesting reading. I'll get it for you. Bill

Bill,
you can email it to me at
[email protected] or
[email protected] or
you can just post it on here! Thanks a bunch! Sounds like a neat magazine!
Mitch

Rainy may be a nice lake but it does not have the highest fish count per net numbers nor does it have the highest weight per fish. The Eagles nest chain has higher per net and larger average fish. No resorts on most of the lakes and less people. My folks are on lake 2 and are nice and secluded.

I have to agree with Curt... the LOW and Upper Red area. Over the last years you have the "best panfishin lake in north america", according to Infisherman Mag. plus one of the best walleye lakes in the US. When the walleye bite turns on in '06 the land around there has to skyrocket. My money is on LOW or Upper red.
Rainy Lake...not just for the world class fishing, but for the beautiful scenery.

rainy for me too- the wife and i are putting the finishing touches on our cabin up there and the scope of it's fishing versatility never disappoints me.
maybe this would be a good time to bring this up- we're to the point of building the cabin where light fixtures, fans and switches need to be wired, so if there's an electrician out there who wouldn't mind doing maybe, what, 6 hours of finish hook-ups and what not, maybe you could use the place for a fishing home base for a couple days as a trade? i built the thing myself but am clueless when it come to the wiring portion. references of course.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
