Hey everyone,

Ive been reading this board to get some info about Vermilion fishing as my dad, brother and law and I are making our way up for the first time and staying at VDL next weekend. I see most talk on here is about walleye and haven't read much on the muskie fishing. Was wondering if anyone could recommend some spots to hits not  necessarily specific locations but general areas.  We will be throwing bucktails, spoons and showgirls for the most part. Thank you for any advice in advance, can't wait to fish! :)

gocubsgo,

Welcome to the Vermilion forum!

Sorry, but I can not help you there as I do not fish for the gators!

I encounter their handy work every where that I fish for walleyes so would think that anywhere that looks good to an experienced muskie guy will probably hold at least one gator!

I have been seeing a fair number of boats trolling over deep water still.  They have been doing so for a good while

I have heard night fishing was working.

Muskie Tom would say anyplace that looks fishy.  But no fish under my dock.

the Professional Musky Tournament Trail  (PMTT) was up there this weekend. Tons of fish caught out of the top ten teams 9 caught multiple fish using bucktails on all sorts of structure.  Looks like the bite was great. I would start looking at the lake map and find the rocks and weeds you want to hit, most of them if not all will hold fish,  then go throw some tails on them. Sounds liked all colors worked, but black might have been the most productive. Should be good...have fun. Post a report too...would love to hear how you do!!

Gocubsgo. Following up on what dano said yes the pmtt was here ( which my daughters boyfriend & his dad won) shameless plug but I couldn't be more proud. It definently sounds like Black buck tails on rocks is the way to go wind blown is better if it's happening but if you can find some deep water near by work that with a bulldog & go shallower with the buck tails. The reefs got absolutely pounded over those 2 days & still produced fish on the 2 nd day so Vermilion is in great shape for Muskies. Good luck

Thank you all for the responses! This week I will be studying the map. Will probably start out in the wolf Bay area and see where it takes us since we are staying right there. Seems like the west end has better structures than east?

I don't know if the west end has better rock piles, but we have a good number of them.  One muskie fishing strategy I have observed seems to be going from hazard marker to hazard marker throwing, typically,  a bucktail.  That, along with the deep water thing, seems to be the most popular thing this year.  Way fewer than usual fishing the weeds out in front of our cabin.

I don't know what they are doing at night...

There is an old saying that goes like this, "Muskies are where you find them".  On Vermilion that is so true. Not to take anything away from the PMTT guys but they were here at the right time. The weather was perfect for Muskies and that is always the most important factor when chasing the Big girls.  My clients and I boated 8 Muskies the week of the tournament and they were all rookies, so you can imagine what kind of days the pros might have during the same period.  Reefs, rocks, islands and the deep weed edges are typically my favorite places to fish this time of the summer.  Bucktails, glittertails and topwaters are my baits of choice.  I don't fish at night simply because I have always been able to catch them during the daylight hours.

Hitting it right is putting it mildly. My buddy Aj who guides on the lake had 49 fish in 18 days leading up to the tourney.

Hey Quincy,

Steady weather pattern with a consistent barometer are always key.  If you get out ahead of a storm front with a falling barometer that is even better.  Warmer water temps mean the fish will be more active and that means they will have to eat more often.  Clouds and wind never hurt either, especially during a steady weather pattern. It's been a great summer for Muskies this year because of the great weather we have had. When it comes down to it, local weather will always be the most important part of he puzzle. Moon phases and wind direction are nice to have but a big Canadian cold front will take a lot of the other stuff right out of the puzzle.  JMHO.
