I will be going to LOTW on Jan. 19th with my father in-law. This will be the first time out on the ice with my father in-law he wants it to be kind of a bonding thing I think. I'm originally from texas and so needless to say I haven't been out on the ice all that often. we will be fishing out of cyrus resort and from what I've heard it's kinda nice. I was just wondering if y'all could give me any advice on how not to make a fool of myself in front of my new father in-law. Like tips on what kind of jigs to use and what not to say things of that sort. any help is much appreciated thanks in advance

HELLO QUICK,
I'LL BE OUT THE 30TH WITH MY FATHER IN LAW.
WERE GOING OUT OF ANOTHER RESORT. MOST LIKELY THE GUIDES WHO TAKE YOU OUT WILL TELL YOU WHAT TO USE OR GIVE YOU JIG STICK WITH JIGS ON THEM. GOLD IS ALWAYS A GOOD COLOR ON THE WOODS. I ALSO WILL USE PINK GLOW OR WHITE. BE SURE TO TIP THE GUIDE IF YOU GET INTO FISH. THE MAIN THING IS TO KEEP JIGGING NEVER LET YOUR BAIT SIT. IF YOUR ARM IS SHOT AT 5PM YOU WERE DOING IT RIGHT. IF YOU OUT FISH THE OLD MAN YOU'LL LOOK LIKE A HERO AND CAN ALWAYS HOLD THAT OVER HIS HEAD. HAVE FUN!!
[This message has been edited by WALTERCRAFT (edited 01-05-2004).]

When you catch your first pout, be a man and grab it by the lip like a big-ole texas large mouth. Take the hook out, and return it down the hole without saying a word.
He will be impressed.

Before you release her back in the water, bring her to your lips and lay on a BIG SMOOCH (a tribute to Roland Martin). You can then expect you father in law to look at you like this shocked.gif

waltercraft,
I disagree with constantly jigging, the most fish we caught on our trip in Dec. were on plain hook set up on rattle reels. We used both glow white and red plain hooks with 2 fatheads hooked tail-to-tail so they were aimed in different directions. On our jigging rods we worked them constantly the whole time we were out there, and yes we caught fish on them but it was 5-1 better on the old dead stick.
Ole

OLE, WOW. I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THAT KIND OF SET-UP. TWO MINNOWS ON A PLAIN HOOK DEADSTICKING? THAT'S A NEW ONE FOR ME.
I'VE ALWAYS HAD MY BEST LUCK WITH THE CONSTANT JIG METHOD, BUT ITS GOOD TO HEAR ANOTHER. WHAT ARE YOU FELLAS DOING ? PLAYING CARDS WHILE FISHING? I DO THAT ON MILLE BUT NEVER ON THE WOODS. I WOULD HATE TO MISS A BITE.

No we were jigging one rod and I brought along some rattle reels that I attached to the plywood hole covers and set them up with a bobber about 4-10" off the bottom.
Ole

One trick we have always played on first-timers, especially when they are not catching any fish, is to tell them that have to much water in their hole. We had one guy bailing water out of one hole into the next for 20 minutes. He finally figured it out.
Take some time and read some of the posts on this forum. This will give you a good idea of what's happening and what people are using. Like the above post, start out with something gold on at least one rod. A plain old gold jig worked just wonderful for us this past Thursday and Friday. Adjust your depth occasionally if your not getting any bites. Last week the closer I was to the bottom the better. And try not to drop anything down the hole. That will get anybody mad. Good luck and have fun!

Bring along plenty of your own favorite glow in the dark jigs in the 1/8th to 1/4 size. Some of the rental houses are pretty well pillaged of jigs. I always bring my own two rods and plenty of swedish pimples and other jigging spoons. Use a minnow head half on the jigging pimple/spoon. Lots of people don't believe that the half out produces but I find that the head half will not flip around and tangle while jigging as much as the whole minnow. Another trick is to stop in town and get some nice shiner minnows in the 2" size before you go to camp. Some days they are the difference between a limit and a few fish. I usually fish one jigger and one dead stick. I jig the dead stick quite a bit however. Don't forget a drop or two of the green anise scent. Keep your powder dry. Gunny

Another little trick you can pull on him is if he steps outside to take care of business snap on a lead depth finder and when he walks back in and sees that bobber down the juices will flow until he realizes what you did. Hopefully he has a sense of humor. I jumped into this one both feet, hook, line sinker last year with Scott Steil. He thought it was funny!!!!!!!!!!Bill

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
