Release problem

Bought a Trufire Smoke release three weeks ago.  Loved it until two nights ago.  As I drew back the ring that holds the shaft and jaws of the release would make a popping sound that I could feel in my palm.  Trufire has gone to a split ring concept, different than the solid ring.  The store took it back and I bought another Trufire which had the same ring system (they all do now).  The newer release was more expensive and seemed better built.  Just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem?  BC
