Topwater Bowfin

MN BassFisher

Recommended Posts

I had yet to land a Bowfin ("Dogfish") from my kayak, I've hooked into a couple but they have always gotten off whether that be by snapping the line or breaking/popping the hook. They really tend to come out to feed and will chase just about anything around dusk on this lake, I was throwing a black buzzbait around some pads and watched a wake come out behind it. I slowed down my retrieve and then it didn't take long for my rod to load up...game on!

That's cool! One of my favorite fish to catch. I usually don't intentionally target them, but will always cast to them if I see them patrolling the shallows.  If nothing else, a fun bonus fish, for sure!

They are of course a prehistoric fish and very cautious. We had one under our dock for several years and it would come out just far enough to look up and watch my Lab....who in turn would look down and watch the fish. They can be hard to fool at times and are incredibly strong. Sorta fascinating to think they have been swimming in these lakes since there have been lakes here for them to swim in.

No reason to harm them.

It seems every year I tangle with at least one in the 3-6  lb. range here. I never target them either but sure are fun to C & R. What a fight! Will definitely test your gear.

Agreed. I think they are a pretty fascinating species:  they fight like crazy, when in the right mood will hit just about anything, and are flat out unique (with that dorsal fin that moves like an eel and the fact that they can breathe air). I'm sure others have different opinions on them as they will ruin a lure/bait quickly but they should not be killed upon catch which is a very common misunderstanding of these fish.

What I really wanna know is:   How’d get that lattice to curve like that?  Bomb diggity!

Fish Newton lake is great for walleyes. Everyone goes to basswood and forgets about newton. The late fall pike bite in pipestone is amazing and it’s a great time to catch the big walleyes are up there feeding too.

It would cost you 830 bucks to watch every game this NFL season under multiple platforms.   I don't have peacock or espn+ or whatever they want me to have, so I'll just have to relent on being able to watch a few games.  I refuse to cave in to their demands just to watch the Packers play the Eagles in Brazil.  I think last year peacock had the exclusive rights to the Miami/KC playoff game too.  I'm sure that will occur again in January.

Well it's a win, but it wasn't to Purdy with all the turn overs and penalties!

Oop, must be another Vikings game.  So far it's been a Prudy game, Viks!  😁

Another prediction.   Under the cloud of "Woke Inclusion" Just like the Mn state flag and the Mn Twins, the Vikings name will be going away in a few years! Their already making them look like Snow flakes!  We can't have the uniforms of angry Norwegian people!  Sounds funny but. Wait for it! 😒

New frontiers.  Expand the market; make more money.  Despite some PR moments, they’re not in it for charity.   BUT, they might want to take a moment and see how that worked out for NASCAR.  Not that having to buy premium channels to watch races was the only problem but it sure helped kill the fever for a lot of people.

Get ready. Any bets in a few years the average Joe NFL fans aren't going to be able to watch their local teams, unless it's pay for view!  Sounds like their greasing the wheels now.  There are 5 international games this year! ☹️ "The NFL will play a regular season game in Madrid, Spain in 2025, as the NFL prioritizes global growth and expands the International Games to new cities and markets around the world."
