Looking at taking a day trip from the Ash River to Lac La Croix with the family, any insight or advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

When you finally get to La Croix your going to be traveling on the Canadian side of the lake, so you'll need to stop at Canadian customs on sandpoint. So I think you need at least a pass port for everyone. From the ashriver to loon falls portage is about 43 miles one way, so think about the gas factor. When you get get to the south end of little vermillion lake you'll be in about 4 ft of water so keep up on plane all the way into the mouth of the river. When you get to 56 Rapids you can go thru up on plane but it might be best to putt thru and stay as much as possible to the U.S. Side of the opening, more rocks on the Canadian side. After that you'll go through another channel and then you'll see the portage in a little bigger bay, where the bay starts to open up wider than the channel there's a rock right in the middle, so once again stay to us side as far as you can get. There are 2 canoe outfitters on lacroix, Zups and Cambells you can look them up on the web to find there locations if you need gas or just stop for food. Stay away from the Indian village, they didn't like me and the guys going to the mouth of the namakan River. I never went east of the Indian village so I'm not sure about the rock hazards that way, we didn't encounter any rocks from Beatty portage to the Indian village, but maybe we just got lucky. If you look up Dave Beckman on YouTube he is a cranelake fishing guide and has a video of him going up the river and you can see how he goes through the Rapids and to the right of the rock by loon falls portage. I don't know what the portages cost but I would say at least 20 each way so that's $80. Hopefully this helps a little bit.
