Lake Superior 6/27/2015 report

[Surface Tension]

 3PM. Clear skies, claim winds, and hot. The latest Coast Watch image showed a seam of out of Two Harbors so off we went.  1st though was a demonstration of petro management/coasting with a 21' Chieftain from the RR bridge to the pump at Holiday gas station.  It can be done but you have to cut through Culver's parking lot.  

  Water temp 50 degrees heading out of the harbor and a gradual warm up to 64 when heading East, the lake was a mirror.  Wait, why am I leaving the near shore 50 degrees.  Because its what I call a Johnny Come Lately break and pop up with an off shore wind. They disappear as fast as they appear.   I would have kept running for the main break if it weren't for all the finning cohos on the surface.    There are 3 of us so 6 rods out, 4 on top, and 2 dipsys.   I didn't like the amount of board line I had or lack there of.
 In these conditions I want 150' out on both sides.  I had half that and was on my to do list but an engine coupler, Ujoints, controls, cable, and carb rebuild got in the way and why this is my 1st big lake report.  

  We lost a lot of salmon with 2 for 12 and yes the hooks were sharp,  just happens.   Pink and purple on the surface seemed to edge out anything else.   I ran flasher w/clown wobble glows on the dipsys and went 2 for 4 on lake trout there.

  Pulled the boat out of the water at 10PM.  It was a great day to be out.

We were out 6/27 from 7am-10am, went 4-6 with 3 lakers and a walleye.  All on pink and purple stick baits, 30' down up to the surface.  The crazy walleye came in over 150' deep only 12' down or so!  We were fishing WI side near the border, about 10 miles out of the harbor.  

It was a great day to be on the water!

the son and I were out this past Saturday. weather was great. we put in under the high bridge and shot up the shore past the pump house. did not want to go to far as the first time out in a few years with the boat.   we trolled for a little while then shot up to the mcquade area.  trolled from there to the knife, even with the sun out, water temp was 45 - 50 degrees.  everything seemed to be working great, but the one thing that was odd was the whole time we were out there we did not graph one single fish.  thought maybe the finder was acting up, but when we throttle up to moved, it would pickup the turbulence off  the prop and show it as fish on the finder.  was this a odd day or has the great lake become the dead sea?

No dead sea.  My son and his friend have fished the lake a lot this year and have noticed the same thing.  Difference is they're on fish.  Run board's and dipsies as the majority of fish in the temps you are describing will be high in the water column.  Your sonar like many will not pick up those fish that are up high.  Your boat trolls towards them and the fish scatter away, up high.  We had large schools of coho hitting bugs on the surface all around us the first week of July.  Never marked one.  BC
