I have a friend at work who wants to buy a new auger. I told him strikemaster, which i have or a jiffy. He wants an eskimo because it's cheaper. Lets hear some opinions guys. Thanks

I know people with each of those brands both in the new styles and old styles. No complaints from anyone. It comes down to personal choice, I guess.

I own an Eskimo Barracuda. I have been very happy with its performance. This is my 4th season of owning it. One of the selling points that got me to buy it (besides the price) was the heavy duty gear box. It is supposed to make it last longer. One of the disadvantages of it is the weight. It is a brute compared to my buddy's old Strikemaster. Would I buy again? I am not sure. I have been happy with the performance, but lugging it around can be a pain. If price is not an issue, I would probably go with something lighter.

Go to the "Equipment" page on this site. It's the 5th selection down on the main Forums page. There's a thread called "Which power auger" there's some good info on each auger.

I own a baracuda and love it. Always starts and seems to burn right through the ice. Also Eskimo/Ardisen has excellent customer service. I owned a shack from them and had problems and they kept me very happy by sending me a completly new shack and paying for shipping the old one back!

I have a Eskimo Mako 8in. for about 3 years now and never have had a problem with it yet. My brother in law has a jiffy auger but he favors mine because it is faster and has a longer shaft on it.

icehook
I have a friend that has the Baracuda ice auger and it is very cold blooded. It take 10 minutes just to warm it up. He ended up selling it this winter and getting the strikemaster.
Ive had a Strikemaster for ten years and have had know problems with it----- I even named it 2 pole because it always starts in any waether condition on the second pole.

I have a 1965 Eskimo auger. Runs like a top. Is not the fastest auger I have ever seen but always start within 3 pulls. I actually have the original paperwork for the auger as it was my father-in-laws before he passed away. I have used it for over 10 years now and it purrs like a kitten.

I own an Eskimo shark, Jiffy 3.5 hp premiere (I think it's been discontinued), and a Lazer mag. Pros and con's...Jiffy is the fastest (3.5 hp) also the heaviest by far, also the hardest starting but once warmed up, it runs great. we use this one for late season ice +36" on LOW. Eskimo is second fastest, cuts a 10 " hole pretty darn quick, it is lighter than the jiffy, but hevier than the lazer mag. Starts and runs awesome, I like their handle configuation. On the right side there is 2 handles, one with the throttle and on/off switch, the other is for carrying it hole to hole. This auger gets the most use of the 3. the lazer mag is the lightest of the 3, also the slowest. It does cut nice holes and it runs good, but the only time I generally use it, is when I am pulling a house on the lake by hand and the ice is thicker than 12" (lazer hand auger with less than 12"). To sum it up...you won't go wrong with any of them, comes down to personal preference, ford, chevy, dodge.
Good Luck!
Ken
