Braided line with fleuro leader

Recommended Posts

How do people generally attach their leaders to their braided main line? Tying directly together or using a barrel swivel. The applications would be vertical jigging and pitching plastics. Thanks!

I think most tie a uni not.  I just use a tiny barrel and tie on 3 feet of low vis trilene xt. mainly for throwing sticks and tubes in the river.

Back to back uni's for me but I use some 6 lb braid,so I double that up using a surgeons knot.

I use a small barrel swivel partly for ease of use, mainly to reduce line twist.  Look through the swivel section.  You can find some very small swivels rated at 35lbs.

I also use flouro for lindy and bottom bouncer snells tied to braid.

Do a search for "Alberto's knot" and watch the video clip. It basically ties the fluoro around a loop of the braid. Easy, simple and strong. I will never tie the uni knot or surgeon's knot again for this purpose.

Uni to uni is a good one, but once I learned the Alberto it's been nothing but. I've never had one let go.

I'm still on the uni to uni train.  I checked out both the Albright and alberto knots you guys posted and though they definitely look easier to tie, they both leave that loop bent up on the one end.  You guys that use those knots.  Does that affect your casting distance?  I use braid on everything now.  The uni to uni casts very well, even with a 1/16 oz jig.

Chris, the Alberto knot ties down smaller than the uni knot, and makes casting easier. Give it a try.

Well, I guess the only way to find out for myself is to give it a try this weekend.  Good fishing guys!!

I like the look if the Alberto. I always used the double uni but found it cumbersome. Thanks for all the input!

I run small swivels on rods that I jig with to help with lune twist.  This is definitely a need when jigging plastics.   Otherwise the Albright knot works well for me.

For those with smart phones the knot wars app is a nice one with great illistrations and knot strength info for different line types.

I liked the look of the Alberto knot and gave it a try this past week and it worked great, I also use braid on everything with the fluorocarbon leaders and have absolutely no complaints. I did find it easier to tighten if I moistened the lines as I always do with other knots.

I used to use a small barrel swivel...mostly because I was intimidated by tying a good know line to line.  I always  hated it when the barrel would hit the line guides.  It can't be good for the guide.  I've had one of these tools for a year or so, but only decided to try it yesterday when I put new line on a couple of my bait caster reels.   It's so easy that I kick myself in the butt for not trying it before.  You can get them cheap (usually less than $5 on ebay).  I used the tiefast tool to splice braid to fluro in the second knot  shown in this video.

Chock up another convert from the uni - uni to Albright knot!!!  Much quicker to tie and stood up to numerous fish over the weekend!

The modified albright knot has beaten the back to back uni knot in every test in every show or publication. I switched years ago. It is very rare that it breaks at the knot I make 6 to 8 ft flouro leaders and only retie if they get down to 2 ft or so from cutting and re tying lures on. I use it with Nanofill on my dropshot rod and make the leader 10 or 12 ft long as the knot is so smooth it can be reeled onto spool and you can still cast with it.

I've been using the uni-uni for a couple years for tying mono or fluorocarbon leaders onto Fireline and Nanofil with great success but I might have to give the Albright a try.

Wow, great info.  My old knot was much more difficult to tie.

Thanks everyone!

I've been using the uni-uni for a couple years for tying mono or fluorocarbon leaders onto Fireline and Nanofil with great success but I might have to give the Albright a try.

Well, I just got back from our annual walleye trip to Canada and I gave the Albright knot a try.  I was using it on two different rods.  One was loaded with 8# Fireline and the other with 8# Nanofil.  To each I attached 8# Trilene XL leaders.  When I tie my leaders I always wet the line to lubricate as I do know this is particularly important with Nanofil.  I did notice that when I got snagged and was forced to break the line, the leaders tied on using the Albright knot broke at the knot whereas, the ones using the uni-uni broke at the jig.  This was noticeable and repeatable enough that I switched back to using the uni-uni knot for tying on my leaders.

I can confirm a very similar finding with the Alberto knot.  50lb braid to 20b Seaguar floro, the line seems to break above the knot.  Today I had 2 lines break on the top edge of the Alberto knot.  It was nice and quiet and went through the guides great but It is not a good knot to use in situations where you have sharp hard hook sets, flipping bass jigs.

I was hopeful the knot would be good due to how smooth it came through the guides.  Oh well back to the old standby, uni to uni.

Not sure how they did the wood back then, but now they have plastic I'm sure you could bend into a circle if yea needed. 👌

What I really wanna know is:   How’d get that lattice to curve like that?  Bomb diggity!

Fish Newton lake is great for walleyes. Everyone goes to basswood and forgets about newton. The late fall pike bite in pipestone is amazing and it’s a great time to catch the big walleyes are up there feeding too.

It would cost you 830 bucks to watch every game this NFL season under multiple platforms.   I don't have peacock or espn+ or whatever they want me to have, so I'll just have to relent on being able to watch a few games.  I refuse to cave in to their demands just to watch the Packers play the Eagles in Brazil.  I think last year peacock had the exclusive rights to the Miami/KC playoff game too.  I'm sure that will occur again in January.

Well it's a win, but it wasn't to Purdy with all the turn overs and penalties!

Oop, must be another Vikings game.  So far it's been a Prudy game, Viks!  😁

Another prediction.   Under the cloud of "Woke Inclusion" Just like the Mn state flag and the Mn Twins, the Vikings name will be going away in a few years! Their already making them look like Snow flakes!  We can't have the uniforms of angry Norwegian people!  Sounds funny but. Wait for it! 😒

Just sayen, not all the loyal old fans, can pay for the NFL viewing package!

New frontiers.  Expand the market; make more money.  Despite some PR moments, they’re not in it for charity.   BUT, they might want to take a moment and see how that worked out for NASCAR.  Not that having to buy premium channels to watch races was the only problem but it sure helped kill the fever for a lot of people.

Get ready. Any bets in a few years the average Joe NFL fans aren't going to be able to watch their local teams, unless it's pay for view!  Sounds like their greasing the wheels now.  There are 5 international games this year! ☹️ "The NFL will play a regular season game in Madrid, Spain in 2025, as the NFL prioritizes global growth and expands the International Games to new cities and markets around the world."
