Lake Independence

Recommended Posts

I tried this lake for the first time ever on Saturday morning.  Arrived at the launch about 8 a.m. and I'd say the trailer parking was 1/2 full but was surprised to see people coming off the lake already at that time.  By the time I took a bathroom break around noon there were less trailers in the lot than when I launched!  Must be an night time/early morning bite on this lake judging by all the early risers and seeing as I got skunked.  I was targeting walleye but couldn't seem to find them.

Surface water temps were in the 58-60 range in most spots.

One thing I noticed was that the Navionics app was grossly off in it's depth contours on this lake.  Has anyone else experienced this?  There were numerous times where it was a good 10 feet off.  I rely heavily on this app on my iPhone as my sonar doesn't have GPS, and typically it is very accurate on other lakes in the area I've been on.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to get back out there again.  Has anyone else had success on Indy this year?

Was your map off because of the low water level that is not accounted for in Navionics?   The first thing I do on a lake with my humminbird and lakemaster chip is determine if the water levels are plus or minus what the chip shows and offset the levels so they are accurate.

I have had luck at all times of day on Indy, sometimes they just don't bite or you cannot find them,  I haven't made it out there this year but will try to soon since it is so close to me.  I have noticed it on the phone app in some spots when I was ice fishing that Navionics was off by a bit, when I use Lakemaster or Lake Insight in the boat it seems pretty right on most spots.

I did notice the water levels were low, but not 10 feet low.  I suspect there's just some outdated data that they're using.

I have a question about Indy.  On the Three Rivers website it states the park is open until 10PM.  Does the access close at 10PM or can you use the access after 10PM?

The way I understand it you can't enter after 10 p.m., but you can always leave after 10 p.m. if you enter earlier (any gate would open automatically when approaching from inside the park).  There's a link (motor restrictions or speed restrictions designated by the DNR.) under Boating Restrictions and Aquatic Invasive Species on this page: http://www.threeriversparks.org/activities/boating.aspx

From that PDF at the top:

Class I
Lakes that have a public access,
shared lakeshore ownership.
There are no motor restrictions on these
lakes, and overnight fish houses are
permitted. Access to the lake through park
boat launches is permitted until 10 PM.
Egress from the lake through park boat
launches is permitted twenty-four
hours/day
. At locations where there is no
entry gate, access and exit are twenty-four
hours/day.

Lake Independence (Class I)

You can always check at the ranger station when you go in to verify, but this seems to be the rule.

The boat ramp will be down to 1 lane for the next while so they can treat the zebra mussels again. I haven't been out there yet this year, but thinking about venturing over tomorrow so I can buy my annual pass and be ready for musky season.

Indy gets pounded that is no secret the areas you are fishing get hit hard, the only advice I would offer is try different parts of the lake and follow the moon phases the luck I have had out there was away from everyone else, get there right when the gate opens, when I fish out there I am at the lake at 5 and off by 9 before it gets crazy.

Went out last night for 3 hours and Pounded the back island bay and around YMCA again with 3 casters and we didnt lift one. But I agree most every night there is another boat or two back there as well. Anyone like fishing Rebecca?

I have fished it twice buy most muskie anglers will not fish it because it is where the DNR milks the skies for getting fry.

I must be real lucky, caught another healthy one, 30"  in the shallows tonight less than 6 FOW.

Dude, I already trolled that spot, nothing but slimmers!  😄 Glad I saved money by stopping smoking a while ago. It's free most of the summer now! Been calm and yellow out for days! 🤧

Bet you would enjoy a nice paddle down the Cahulawassee River, too then. 😏

Talked to my neighbor is getting ready for a trip via fall lake.    They use small boats with like 10 to 25 hp outboards and portage wheels.   There are two portages to get into pipestone bay, with the second one being over a hill.   From pipestone they can go around to Jackfish? bay,   There is a big sign to warn about where the no motors area is.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.
