Fishing Reports Upper Red Lake Opener

Recommended Posts

No replies? Sometimes means good, but probably not this time. We hit the water Saturday at 1:30 P.M. in my camo lund, launching at the park ramp. Guys leaving said it was very slow. Saw a fish netted from one of the docks. On getting out in the lake, it was obvious the normal early drop-off bite wasn't happening....most all boats were well off the breakline. We fished minnows for almost an hour in two different areas without a bite and only saw a couple fish netted. Switched to cranks and caught 18 by 4:30. All eaters, only one over 17. Covered lots of ground, passed by many boats and saw very few netted.  We didn't catch any sheepfish or pike, which seemed odd. Water was around 55 degrees.

We thought fishing was okay but certainly not what we expected. Can't say what the morning or evening bite was like.

Good luck

Lake conditions and fish patterns looked to be weeks ahead of previous years. Fish were still schooled up and biting very light in the bad weather. We had to get right on top of structure and then wait for a school to come by to get a consistent bite. It seemed a lot of guys we talked to weren't tuned into this and had problems. They were still at the mouth of the river and/or doing a fast troll through deeper water. We parked on a rock pile on the north side in 6ft and pitched green fuzzy grubs and caught limits of fish all throughout the days over the weekend within a couple hours. I think a lot of guys where way too deep for the water temps and it doesn't surprise me that boats that moved around a lot would finally run into the schools and structure that were producing.

I have not been to Red since 2007, I really need to get back.  I was first introduced to a bunch of FM'ers during our visits, I used to take 20+ guys from the UP on that annual weekend getaway.

  • 3 weeks later...

I personally was fishing around the Park Rapids area this weekend, however I have some family members fishing on Upper Red on Saturday and they had a hoot in the few hours they were out!  They pulled cranks in the 4-7 foot range after launching out of Roger's and boated 50+ walleyes with fish size ranging 15-21 inches.  I was surprised that they reported minimal boats on the water and zero pressure on the areas they were targeting.  They caught a lot of fish just barely over 17 inches and had to work a little for their eaters!  In my opinion this is a great issue to have!  Most importantly they were able to get my 4 year old cousin on some awesome walleye action and she is completely "hooked" on fishing now!

I've been way too busy to think about fishing but I talked to John from Beacon's today and he said that this weekend was by far the best fishing of the season.

My wife and I were up Friday and Sat, staying at Big Bog, fishing just outside the Tamarack. Friday afternoon the water was rough but we had good fishing!!!! It was fun. Had to sort thru quite a few +17's and small fish to get our eaters but it was fun. Sat morning was tougher, we only caught two fish!! Late Sat afternoon went back out and the fish were biting better, again sorted thru overs and unders but got several that we could take home.

Is it a concern that its hard to find fish in that 14.5 -17 inch range? How long will it take the 12-13 inch fish to grow to 15-16 inches?

I hope they don't open up the slot so those 17-20 inch fish get eaten!!! Leave them be the future spawners!!

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.

This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.
