Sitting here in Illinois waiting for the opener to get here so we can open up the cabin.OK so what are everyone's thoughts on when ice out will be?

Should be out by the weekend on Kab...and that is about as far north as one can get without crossing the border! Tom Cod bay went out Tuesday.

Kabetogama is ice out! One of the earliest on record. Lots of ice this morning on the main lake, just floating around from Sugarbush to Martin and west to about mid lake. Wind blew hard this afternoon and this evening I can't see any ice north or east as far as I can see. I will check for the Park's official ice out, but boats could be running all over now. Sure will beat the last two years of ice fishing on opener.

It appears that the north section by the Rock Gardens may still have a little ice based on the picture from the site below. It may also be gone if that picture was taken early in the day. I find it interesting to go back a few days and look at the ice-out progression on the various bodies of water.

Here is a good source for ice out information. I have been using it for years. You may need to update the "date" from the site. You may also need to move back a day or two based on how much cloud cover there was.

Water is low right now, watch out for rocks.

Early ice out it is for Kab.

The spawn will be early also , but will depend greatly on the weather that happens today , and the days to come. Colder than normal temps will delay , or greatly slow up the process up there , and will make for a stretched out spawn , but warmer weather will speed it up greatly .

So at this point it's hard to say we're the fish will be lurking , come opening weekend.

Yes , the lake is low also., but some rain can bring the level up very quickly.

Either way , I'm looking so forward to jigging them up come opener.

the water is low... but it is higher than it was last year at this time. all will be fine by the opener.

Is that a concern? Higher than it was last year? Last year was a disaster for docks.

Or was there extra stuff that happened last year to raise the water level?

The low water has been a godsend for building docks! No snow left to melt and no rain in the forcast...Yes low water is a concern...

It's feast or famine. We do need rain, as much of the state had below normal snowfall. I don't know of a chart for Kab, but the Namakan and Rainy levels are just slightly below last year at this time, but within the targeted levels. The high water last year was from heavy rainfall in late May and early June. That was pretty unusual. You can see the Namakan and Rainy lake levels here:

Yes but...look at how steep the graph was going last year and this year it is pretty flat.
