THE PLUG!!!

Witnessed this yesterday

Chime in if you have something to add.

Here's another.

When there are 2 ramps at the landing, its for 2 boats, not for you to need both sides.

Witnessed that a handful of times yesterday.

If you're just getting into "boating" then I would recommend driving that hitch around for a good week, back into places, test it out. The landing is not a place to test out your lack of skills.

Don't forget to tilt the motor up before you drive away!

Don't forget to unfasten your transom straps before you back in!

Don't forget to put your jack in the "up" position after your trailer is connected to your hitch!

Posted

Don't forget to use safety chains from trailer to truck!

Don't forget to attach the pull rope to boat when launching boat!(been part of that scenario)

Don't forget your life jackets!!!

Posted

Don't forget to leave your safety chain and trailer crank rope attached to your boat until you have the back of the boat in the water!

Don't forget your fishing license

Don't forget to tie the anchor rope to the boat

Don't forget a sober driver.

Make sure the trailer is locked

When leaving the ramp parking lot, make sure your trailer doesn't clip the front of the vehicle you parked beside!

Don't forget to park your vehicle and trailer in one spot. Pull in straight and leave just enough room on the sides to exit and enter in order to maximize the number of parking spots.

Don't forget to offer to help others launch and trailer their boats.

Load your equipment into your boat away from the landing area. A few years back I got stuck behind a very famous tv fishing personality and pro guide in the brainerd area...he backed his boat down to water then proceeded to unload from the back of his truck all his rods, tackle boxes, life jackets, coolers etc.etc...everything but the kitchen sink! We sat there and had to watch this go on and on for at least 15 minutes. He could have done this up in the parking lot not at down at the water.

When taking down your unconventional set up don't forget to load your expensive rods at clear lake and depend on a nice guy to hide your expensive stuff in the weeds. Tape the clip attached to the anchor so it doesnt randomly fall off. Charge your batteries. Make sure your lights work, people will let you over if your blinker is on, put people bringing kids on fish, measure your sunfish when you're in them so you don't regret cutting them up, use more than one strap so your canoe makes it back from the lake, make sure the walleye is on before setting the hook, bring clothes that are too warm for the landing, they might be warm enough for the windy lake, check everything and don't assume you have stuff. Most Importantly don't forget a good attitude. Things will go wrong, frankly all the time. Some days are flawless, most are not. Just remember if you're on the fish the bad stuff doesn't matter.

Yes, offer help.

There was an issue Saturday afternoon at one of the south metro landings.

I missed most of the action but I as the fifth boat floating in line waiting to come off the lake while someone on shore was having issues at the landing.

I was told by the person floating ahead of me that the guy at the landing had clipped a trailer and was having issues backing and loading.

Meanwhile four guys stood onshore and watched without lifting a finger to help the poor guy who obviously didn't know what he was doing.

He finally gave up and left the landing with the boat loaded diagonally on the trailer.

From my view from 100 yards out on the water, it was a simple problem of the trailer being too far into the water and the boat kept floating off the trailer leaving it crooked.

Help a guy out. After that point the people around me were helping each other out to try to make things move quickly and smoothly.
