Any sign of the run in Ashland or Duluth yet? Should be starting soon...

Thanks,

Paul

Watched on the point tonight saw no smelt caught. Seems there is a report that they are coming in. Not so. Water temp on the beach 37 deg. Way to cold for a good run. Need some nice warm calm days to get the temp up. Was on the river today and found ice in some of back bays with water temp of 40 deg

Thanks Loadmaster!

Reports that some folks got 500lbs out of Ashland Sunday nite.

I am thinking sometime this weekend they should start to show up. Water still cold. Point was packed last night even with no smelt

Keep us posted load! Thanks

Nothing Last Night. Water still cold

Im guessing this weekend will be the start and be good all next week. Mid to late april is usually when it gets good.

They are getting some on the WI side of the point near the piers

Thanks for the reports Load! Going to join in on the fun tonight and see what we can come up with.

Bd110. Where hv you been? Long time no posts.

Is a cast net legal to use? If it is, does anyone use them off of the pier?

Posted

Checked out Ashland and PP. Average pulls for the night was 2-4.

Still to early, temp the point last night 39 degrees. They would get 2 and then nothing. Stayed until 11 checked out the tot lot same thing nothing. Heard they were doing a little better on WI point right at dark and then down to nothing. Looks like it might be sometime, with the forecast in the next couple of days rain snow mix with east winds.

Not sure if it is legal, but have seen people use them. Looks like a lot of work for a couple of smelt. The ones I saw had some type of pulley system rigged on a pole the net in

Posted

Cast nets aren't legal. I've asked a dnr guy before and that's what I was told.

lispeej,

I haven't been any place special for whatever reason other things have been taking control of my time.

We were able to find a few Smelt last night but the run has not started as far as we could tell but it seems to be getting close. Going to give it another try Saturday evening to see if the run is building up some steam. Not sure what next weeks colder temps will do for us but time will tell.

Good to see you back Bd110. We've all been busy too one way or another. Good luck smeltinG!! Let us know how you Do. I'll probably come up during the week.

A few tonight, a very few. Biggest load I saw maybe `15 and then started slowing down till 1-0 per net. It was that from tot lot to bridge. RUMOR they are doing good at the airport just what I have heard 170 per pull

Does anybody net smelt in Burnside lake?

Posted

My cousin seined Burnside several years ago. He got a lot but they were all 3-4 inches too small to eat. All were released. He never went back.

Let me tell ya, alot of wet and tired pullers tonight. A good pull maybe 1/4-1//2 ice cream bucket I would guess the biggest I saw, 30 in one pull. They have started to get a few in Port Wing trap nets

I was working last night so the plus side was I stayed dry and that's a good thing! Things are looking good down on the point at the moment so it looks like we will be giving it another try this evening. Wish things were a little warmer but that's how it goes.

BD110 you must have cleaned up early, did not see you at the tot lot only one net. A few at the bridge left around 10pm and saw three caught. Was not short weather
