I wonder what wins if a boat propeller accidentally motors through a net?

Why doesn't The DNR let them come to the hatchery and let them take the walleye after they have been stripped? They could keep an accurate record of how many are taken that way. Rory

Probably not the boat driver!

I am sure he will be buying a new net plus the cost of any supposed fish lost if he is caught!

I have seen such a thing happen, it was not intentional, the result was the houseboat limped back to it's origin. Imagine 100' of lead core 3/8" diameter line 100' of mono line and another 100' of top line two very visible floats and two 8 pound down rigger balls(or suitable wieghts) used as anchors wrapped around your lower unit, that is if the prop does not cut the top line and mono. You will be dead in the water for sometime trying to get this mess out. So I guess I would say that the net may win this battle.

It is very nice here today light wind open water Eagles and Ducks are all giddy, life don't get much better out my dining room window. Jessie the Chessie can now swim again, she has been waiting patiently.

Darrell Larson over and out.

I would imagine they feel the netting and harvest of the fish themselves is part of the tradition and overall experience. But I have to say, your suggestion is one of the more sensible solutions to a problem I've read on this site - regarding a variety of outdoor related issues.

It could be the walleye that come up the river may be a distinct population of the Vermillion walleye population that prefers to go up the river to spawn. You don't want to mess with that.

It is really critical that any location or segment of the population is not targeted to hard.

The tribe at present suppose to be keeping track of every walleye they take.

In many ways the DNR hands are tied and they can't do much, just take criticism. Also it helps if both parties can work mutually together for what is best for the resource.

If anything can be done in the long run it is more of the political nature.

Found this on there website

Spearing and Netting Regulated

To begin with, none of the eight Bands do anything in the 1837 Ceded Territory without first meeting with State DNR officials. With respect to the fisheries, a committee exists, the Fisheries Technical Committee, that meets twice per year. At these meetings, biologists and representatives from both the State of Minnesota, GLIFWC, Mille Lacs, and Fond du Lac get together to go over data, exchange information, and review the management of the fisheries within Mille Lacs and the other inland lakes where Band harvest takes place. Data is discussed and models are developed that are used to predict the current status of the walleye fishery within Mille Lacs and the other lakes. With these models, both the State and Tribes agree on allowable safe harvest levels (quotas) for each lake, not only for walleye, but for northern pike, yellow perch, burbot, and tullibee.

That truly is great news!

Great news.

Another reason to be thankful for the stewardship of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe. As i read it, they've asserted the position to the Fond du Lac Band that Lake Vermilion is their lake to manage treaty rights on.

They also fund a nice little radio station, run a pretty good bait store, and maintain a very nice golf course. Among other things.

Yes, the Bois Forte Band can be given full credit for this decision!

I guess I will have to go to lunch at the Wilderness Grill. Oh the sacrifices I make.

Agreed Del-think I think I will make some reservations to hack up the golf course (an annual tradition) and play a bit of blackjack!

Let them know you appreciate the move and a reason to golf there and maybe go to the casino, otherwise you may not. Thank them.

It's a good thing to thank Bois Forte for kicking FDL out of there sand box, but it would be helpful to everybody if they would account for their annual walleye take.

The DNR was going to revisit the special regulations on walleye this year because of the low harvest last year, they could changed the slot or put the limit back to 6 fish. The DNR decided not to do this since FDL announced it's plan to net. Now that FDL changed their plan we might see a change in the special regulations, the DNR will have to post their intent at the boat landings for a year before the changes can take effect. Keep your fingers crossed.

Hats off to the Bois Forte Tribal Council, they obviously get it. In the article in the Mpls. Trib it was pointed out that "the health of Lake Vermilions waters and wildlife is a big worry for its residents and resort owners, who rely heavily on the tourism it brings".

My hope would be that Tribal Chairman Leecy can bring his obvious intelligence and negotiating skills to bear with the Mille Lacs band, and the other Wisc. bands, AND the MN DNR.

The DNR and the bands have assured us for 15 years that there was no problem at Mille Lacs.

2,000 pounds wasn't enough, so they went elsewhere.

Glad they turned them away.

This happened many years ago near Hayward Wisconsin in somewhat similar fashion and I remember thinking then how good it was. This is a wise and thoughtful outcome and whatever we think about other aspects of walleye management etc. we should really appreciate this. One more reason to love the Vermilion area!

Mille lacs band was not very happy when 5-6 Wisconsin bands decided to come net Mille lacs.

Do any of you think it has anything to do with the Governor and his crew coming to Vermilion for the opener? Maybe, they (the band) doesn't want the bad publicity. Hopefully not, because it could be revisited next year by Fon du Lac. Not to mention, the local resorts don't appear to benefit too much from the Governor's crew staying on sovereign land!

Never thought of that angle before. Be a good time to promote why it should stay a no net lake in the future.
