Wondering if any of you out there have relocated to the area from a resonable distance (5 hours in my case) that would be willing to share any advice, tips or concerns you wish you would've had or feel someone may want. Wife has a potential job oppurtunity there that is pretty attractive that would allow us to move there and not have to start over from scratch. Doesnt seem like there is much oppurtunity for rentals up there? Of course we have the boat anchor house that we'd have to figure out here and our parents are not getting any younger...Anyways its a potontial big step to move to what is normally my vacation land and just trying to get as much info as can to make the best decision.

Thanks

Hey dragfoot, me and my wife's experience might have some similarities. We grew up within 45 minutes of the Twin Cities and moved here from Fargo about 4 years ago. PM me if you have specific questions.

We moved up here From Becker 8 years ago. We had a house to sell also. I started working up here while my wife was still working down there until we sold the house. Of course that is also when the housing market was tanking. The saving grace for us was that our hunting camp was only 45 minute drive from Warroad. Cabin has all the goodies in it, like bathroom and kitchen. Feel free to PM me if you like. Some of the realtors up here own rental properties. You could check with them also.

You can find very reasonable places to buy if you shop around. I used Pahlen Realty in Warroad and I think they helped me plenty, good people to work with. The life style is good and, oddly most people fish.

Get your house sold and move on up.

We relocated from Wright county last winter. From our experience, there was not much for renting. For buying, it seems like there was a lot of very low priced places that probably need some work and a few really nice mid grade type of places. We used Pahlen as well and they were great. We were looking for places to buy in the fall and there was limited choices. If you are looking this spring, there will be more options. For us, it was a bit of an adjustment moving up here, but I wouldn't change it for the world. This place is great! Good luck with your potential move up here.

If you want to live in Baudette, the houses are pretty reasonable priced compared to along the river towards the resorts or even comparable houses in Roseau or Warroad. Reed Realty and North Border are other real estate companies.

We relocated to Baudette from the cities almost 4 years ago. We couldn't find rentals either. However if you are serious about renting first, ask around. We were able to rent from someone that had their house listed for sale. It worked out well for us. We are very happy we made the decision to move FAR north.

RUN! don't walk! And when all is said and done, you owe your lady! A major relocation is a huge undertaking but well worth it. When you can go south for a visit and then north to go home............well, priceless. I moved from Mpls to Bemidji many years ago. Never a regret, but sometimes wish I would have gone further north. Very friendly folks in the border area but certainly not the amenities of big cities. I know quite a few people that have made the move north and none have gone back south.

I know of someone with a small home on the water, reasonable, all weather protected and a short run to great fishing, not on the river. Not winterized but could be. A 40 acre hunting property goes with it.

Have fun with your prospective move.

Well guys, the dream has died. The wife's job opportunity didn't pan out and that was the first domino that needed to fall. I had everything lined up to make the move if it did though, had a house we were going to look at and everything. Oh well I guess, I have a nice house, just don't like having to drive 4-5 hours to get to where I want to spend my free time. That being said, I'll still be up there next Saturday afternoon probably fishing out front of Zippel Bay so all is not lost!

Thanks to all of you for your input, it sure made me feel easier about the decision I planned to make. And a bigger thanks to those who took the time to answer some questions in more detail. I do appreciate it!

Sorry to here. You would have liked it up here. I know I sure am glad we made the move. Good luck fishing next weekend.
