Crappie history!

Back at the turn of the century when my kids and I started fishing URL on a regular basis I think the crappie limit was 15. As I recall the limit was changed around 05. Any of you old farts remember?

you are correct the limitnback in the day was 15, and dropped 10 about the time we indicated. we have a couple lakes down here that are managed for panfish, with size, limit and slot enforced

I forgot about the possession part. 30 of those slabs would have been two 5 gal. buckets wow!!

I am pretty sure the crappie limit statewide was dropped from 15 to 10 in 2003. And there was not a "possession" limit (the only one I'm aware of is for perch 20/40).

Yes, 15 slabs in those days filled a 5 gallon pail!!

I dont remember the year (post 2003 I think), but Cookie held a contest where you paid $5 bucks, and if you brought in 5 slabs, you got a 5 card draw for a poker hand. Best hand drawn wins the pot. I think there were 50+ IBOT's that entered, and man the slabs brought in that afternoon were incredible. If my mind is not too clouded by the Capt'n that night, I do believe Jiggle won it (and spent a good part of it at Westwinds afterwards LOL grin )

15 would not fit in a 5 gallon pail when I started. 12 was about it if you walked carefully. By the time wifey joined in, limit was 10 and we had a 7 1/2 gallon pail. Two hand lift highly recommended. Never caught a 2 pounder on the digital scale. 1.8 to 1.9 limits though. 2 pounders were "reportedly" being pulled up all around us though. Have seen some of the early mounts that are truly 2+ pounders. Takes a legitimately measured 16+ to achieve this.

Jiggle topped my hand to take the prize. Scroungie got a little walking cash in his pocket. Westwind got the rest...and then some.

Thats a cherished picture I'm sure. I have one of gabriel from 2010 when he was 3 holding a 15+ that went over 2lbs. Grand memories from a grand lake

I caught hundreds of craps during the boom years. Too many 15"+ to count. To start we were convinced our scale was wrong cuz they had to be 2lb fish!! Got a new scale, same thing. Never did pull a legit 2lber out. I'm still kicking myself though. We had plenty of days where we'd get our limits and they were all 14.75"-15.5" fish, & we never got a stringer mount!! My best ice fishing memories were all out there. Still kicking myself...

I guess we never got lucky and got on the big ones. We caught lots of crappies from about 2001-2004. Biggest we ever got, that was actually measured didn't touch 13". It won a weekend contest at the Drake Motel for the longest and got us a free one night stay. Some awesome memories from those trips!

I am pretty sure you mean didn't hit 14"...majority of the crappies ran 13.25-13.75. We measured correctly (tails pinched mouth closed) hundreds possibly thousands of them and rarely did we hit over 14" or under 13" until the majority had been gone and then since we have found them under 13"

I would agree with Ozzie. I first fished for crappies in 1998 or 99 when Doc first invited me to tag along. We fished it hard all the way up until last year. Many, many crappies but I can honestly say that even though we didn't measure a lot of them, the biggest I remember was 14 1/2". Most were 13-14" but fat. I would guess 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 lbs. Beautiful fish. On another note, I did catch my biggest crappie a couple of weeks ago in a pond within walking distance of my house in Texas that went a shade over 16". Also caught several more in the 13-14" range.

Me too!!! I kept waiting for that mythical 15 incher to put on the wall, never did find one, wish I'd have grabbed a few of the 14 inchers and did a mount.

Good memories though!!! First few times on the ice you could set down just about anywhere and catch limits!!! And the slip bobbering in the springtime on the open water, had one time up by Hudeks where I caught a nice crappie on 17 straight casts!!

When the walleyes started showing up on our lines, when they had to be thrown back, we called them 'rough fish'.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
