Our family is staying at a cabin on the lake starting Monday the 22nd through the following Sunday the 28th.

Just looking for ice reports and what if anything I can expect to catch for fish on the lake.

Wondering if I have to bring the wheeler to get around on the lake, snow depths and truck travel possible?

Thanks all, Merry Christmas

We just got back from there on the 16th.We have a place on the SE arm or Lakewood Bay.We just made the place were you can stay in it in the winter so we're just getting back into icefishing. That is the only part of the lake we tried but we found 14-16' inches everywhere we drilled. We did talk to a neighbor who came by on his ATV which he had just used to move his skidhouse. He said there was some trucks on the main lake the weekend of the 13-14 but sounded like he didn't think it was wise then. The warm weekend melted all the snow but I'm sure it has all frozen again. For a up to the minute look go to Lakewood Lodge HSOforum as they have a webcam. It is a pretty good walleye(it's stocked) & crappie lake in the open water season.Sorry for the book,I hope this helps & good luck.Check with Fred's Bait just west of DR for the latest on the bite in the area.

Just a couple of things to add to my post.First is we never measured the ice that 14-16 was just a guess.Second I had the wrong weekend when talking about the neighbor,it would have been the weekend of the 6-7.Finally all we got was a few small perch but that was OK with us as we were just glad to be out.On a side note I don't believe Sand sees much pressure in the hardwater season. It can be difficult to fish unless you have a good GPS & know the lake as there's a lot of bars & humps.Bowstring which is just a few miles down Co 35 sees a lot more action.

Thanks for al the info,

We have 2 wheelers and portables packed to up to go.

Hope there isn't too much snow to deal with.

I do have a Lowrance GPS and I am hoping the lake master chip in it does the lake well.

My son in law and I are not afraid to punch holes to find fish, but I also want to make this enjoyable for the family and not work.

we are going to be staying I believe in the SE arm of the lake.

Looking forward to the week of vacation.

If it's the bay we're on it's like a little lake of its own.Plenty of places to try & I am sure there are fish using it now.The lakemaster chip we have is pretty accurate,so good luck & above all have fun along with a MERRY CHRISTMAS

  • 2 weeks later...

Gunner, thanks for the advice, our family did extremely well fishing.

The bite was hot and heavy almost everyday, we ate a few meals of fish and brought a few bags home of fish.

Caught Sunnies, Crappies, Perch, Walleyes and Northerns.

Most of success came form the time of 3:30 - 4:30 in the afternoon.

We caught them on mainly wax worms, with a variety of jigs, I personally used the jigging spoons tipped with a waxie. Wife, daughters and other family members liked the bobber set-up which was just as good.

Minnows worked, but just not as fast, but bigger fish came on them.

We targeted 32-34 feet of water, but caught them up to 26' on a flat we found just off the deep hole.

Thanks again, good fishing to you.

  • 5 months later...

There were Mayfly carcasses everywhere yesterday early. I had been finding some eyes during the day from 14-22 fow rigging leeches & crawlers.A little wind is a bonus. The last few days have been slower with the bug hatch & storms rolling thru almost daily.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
