That is true as far as I know. You don't need shiners on Upper Red.

I know you don't NEED shinners. but there has been years where we've had shiners out fish fat heads 2:1. Just thought it was kinda strange not to sell them.

Bait shops in the LOTW area have live Emerald Shiners these days. Years past I'd grab a bag and bring them down with me and sometimes they'd be the shizz. I'm not clear on the legality of taking them to URL and using them anymore though with the invasive laws and what not ??

Kelly P are you out there ? Got any clues on this ??

I'm not much help with this. I haven't fished anywhere but URL for decades so I'm not that up to date on the latest invasive species laws.

So where the closest place with quality shiners? I'm supprised that any bait shop wouldn't have shinners if they are on one of the best walleye lakes in the world.

You know I had this dicussion with Colleen a couple years ago. She got kinda of snippy about it saying trying to keep them alive and make money does not pay. I said well why not during the busier times and again she was snippy? I told he i was not trying to argue just making a point. When aggassi was here he had up to six different minnows and when the fishing was slow he did real well. North country is adding a bigger selection just not sure when .

Shiners die way faster then other bait so first the bait shops start losing money from shiners dying in their tanks. Then when they sell shiners many fishermen either do not keep the shiners in fresh enough water or change the water temperature too quickly shocking and killing the shiners. Then the fishermen come back in with a bucket of dead shiners complaining about "poor bait" and demanding their money back so the bait shop loses more money. Consequently many smaller bait shops do not carry shiners to avoid the hassle and upset customers.

No one in GR or Deer river had emeralds either over the thanksgiving weekend. Just goldens, which I wont use on Red when fatheads/rainbows work so well.

So where is a good place to get shiners? Black duck?

The shell gas station in Black Duck always has a great selection of bait. They will have shiners

You do not need Shiners to catch walleyes or crappies on URL. Female fatheads do just fine. Say hi to Patsy, Jim, and Jon from me Kelly. Maybe bturck will bring up some biscuits for Fred.

I can't understand why you even want common shiner's! By the time you walk out of the bait shop, they will be dead before you can get to your car! mad1DIRTBALL wink

We bought shiners one time for URL last year and there was no difference in fish caught...Won't buy them again unless everyone says thats the only thing they're biting...I don't think Ive seen one report saying shiners way outfished fatheads...Save your money and put a fathead on a red hook, that was our hotbait last weekend...

I would save the shiner money or spend it on good spoons and jigs instead. Shiners do work on Red but so do fatheads, rainbows, chunks of hot dog and even seen walleyes caught a balled up piece of lunchmeat.

Well, I found common silver shinners to work extremely well, and the time we had them they out fished fat head minnows by far. I have no idea why people claim they die right away, we kept them for three days just fine.

So please post about where to find shinners........not about how other stuff works.

This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.

Fall lake has nobody there and yes you have to use portage wheels to get across. At prairie portage you don't cross the border, so you don't have to go through customs. However right next to prairie portage there is a Canadian customs building if you wanted to enter into Canada. I don't know anything about it other than it is there.

Grouse season is right around the corner, my Italian 20-gauge SxS sidelock is still available for trade. 25" barrels, ejectors, single selective trigger, great early season grouse thumper, and in excellent condition for a fifty-year-old gun.   Jim

I was thinking of the fall lake portage,  isn't there someone there too?    Or is it just portage wheels to get boat across? And if you go at prairie portage, isn't that a border crossing, so customs and all that?   I love Quetico BTW
