I'll be back in the area for the next few weeks. Has anyone been brave enough to drive out yet? Anyone finding over 12" of ice on any lakes?

Here is my thing about driving...be the fool to do it and go in I won't feel sorry for you, LOL. and stay away from me haha. but no the ice is good. was out last sunday....had 5-6 inches of ice. now with refreeze solid to walk on and there is actual traction to grip your boots to! instead of an ice rink (shakes head as I try to hand drill a hole last sunday...without spikes) lol. happy fishing! and good luck

Has it been really warm down there besides the rain/thaw couple of days? I was there a couple of weeks ago, and I thought there was 5-8" then. Not across the whole lake of course, but I figured there has to be 12"-15" by now.

Rain last weekend refroze but the refreeze is not as strong as first ice, true 1st ice-should be good to walk and excercise is good for you! Be glad you don't have to walk thew a foot of snow like last year.

I went out to buffalo saturday and found close to 12" in the spot we were in. I walked out from the parking lot to the group near the middle of the lake. A few bites, a few graphed fish, but nothing big. I hope to get out on clearwater this weekend. I don't plan on driving out for quite a while yet. With the numerous freeze/thaw's, I just don't trust the ice as much.

Fished Maple Lake yesterday and got into the crappies again. there was a three hour window where they were just stacked in the area I was fishing. Had a fun time and I can't wait to do a new years eve crappie and bluegill fry for my kids and my mother. think I might make this a new family yearly tradition from now on. Almost forgot where I was fishing the ice was 10 1/2" inches thick. there was a thin ice sign at the access but everywhere I drilled it was like 9 to 10 1/2 inches thick. lots of four wheelers and sled out there.

On maple do you wait around till the big ones move in or move until you find the right school? First time out a couple wks ago all I found was small fish out of the 37 landing

there is one area out there they tend to move into at around the same time each day. as for size most of what I caught was 9 to 10 inchers but that was what I was looking for size I wanted some to eat. earlier in the day I dropped the camera down to see the lay of the bottom and seen nothing but a lot of small perch hanging on the bottom. I did have a nice northern swim past the camera too.

Found the crappies in the north east side deep holes today. Looked like 12 inches of ice and will probably make an inch tonight at this temp. I had the camera down and only saw crappies. Is there any good sunfish? Could you point me in the right direction?

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.

This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.
